My GF has a '90 Ghia 1.8L, runs well (55fwkw!) is auto and has no major issues. They only really have problems when you try and get power out of them, as the the transmissions (auto and manual) are all very weak.
Parts are pretty easy to find, and as for economy, she gets around 550 - 600kms per tank, which is on par with my 2003 Focus (ie not bad for a 16yo car, mind I have a heavier foot ;) ). Expect to pay around the $3k mark I think |

If the girl wants an auto KF/KH, I fully agree with Masquerade's post. The Ghia is the top of the line, EFI 1.8 SOHC engine. It's got decent interior (for what Ford provide for a small sedan) if that matters to you/your daughter.
On cost (in SA) expect to pay up to $5000 privately. Personally i'd keep my eyes on www.fordlaser.com 's classified section, you'll pay less. Whatever faults that come up (no general faults come to mind over high clicks) parts are so common and cheap that anything can be replaced with little fuss. I think i've spent less than $500 over three years on dead or dying parts on my '89 KE TX3. If a better example is what you're after, i'm afraid they only come in manual. The 90-95 KF/KH Laser TX3 comes in two models, both have two doors and 14" factory mags, and sport a nicer interior design. There is the KF/KH TX3 (1.8L DOHC EFI) and the KF/KH TX3 4WD Turbo (1.8L DOHC EFI full time 4wd turbo). I doubt the girl's interested in power, but for a guy with an AUII you might just like it yourself. Rob (PS dirty_hands get my name spelt correctly once please lol)

Thanks Guys. Yeap got to be an auto and I know that cuts it down, like the 1.8 idea maybe better for higher kms. Will check out fordlaser.com.
I use to own a 5 speed twin carb metor, I was real happy with that car. Uncle Ken
