Drag rim/tyre combo for BA ute?

G'day people,
My question is for the drag racers out there.
What wheel and tyre combo do you use when your at the track in your BA ute?
Mine has the standard GT brakes (Mark II) which are blue front and rear.
I was thinking drag radials on stock steel rims but I dont know what fits or what sizes are available.

I think the only size that will fit over your brakes is 17' rims, get your self some second hand 17" rims preferalably alloys and tyres you can get MT streets in 275/50/17 (Rocket Industries sells them), there are a few other tyres you can use but they are proberly the best priced.

you need to find the smallest rim that will fit over the brakes , then find a tyre size that will compliment the diff ratio with the tallest sidewalls you can get so they bag and grab . easy huh

OK Cheers for that info, btw do you reckon the stock clutch would be ok for a few runs, or would I be better off fitting a better clutch when using drag rubber?

When I had MT streets I had a better clutch than std, as soon as I changed my diff gears too 4:1's the clutch went up in smoke so I wouldnt think the factory clutch would last to long with some good rubber like the MT's, also to get a good launch out of a manual you need to slip it off the line, do that to the factory clutch and it will die real quick, the factory clutch's run a organic disc which dont like heat, the more heat the more they will slip, get them to hot and you glase the flywheel/pressure plate and its cactus.
From my experiances the best clutch for the strip is the Textralia Z grip, still has good street manners but can handle alot of punshiment at the strip, so yeh it would proberly be a good idea to upgrade the clutch before you head out.

Thank for clearing that up Mick, my mate couldnt fit 16's over his BF xr8 rear brakes so I thoulght the BA GT/Pursuit rears would have the same issue.

No worries mate,
I ran widened 16 on my when I was racing it and then Bren260 used the same rims and tyres but his was an XR8.
If Brembo's are fitted it would be a different story

Are there different types of steel rims you can use for the ba or are the stock black falcon steelies the ones to use with M/T's. If there are different ones where can I get some in Perth. I can fit 16's on the back of my car being an XT.

Im getting a PD blower kit fitted on my 3v in a couple of weeks and will need the extra traction for the strip.

Yeah they're not brembo's but the blue pbr calipers with grooved discs from the ba fpv's
I've got 18" wheels on it ATM and there looks to be a good 1 1/2" to 2" clearance on the internal diameter of the rim, but maybe the depth might be an issue.
I will see if I can find someone with a stock ba steelie spare that I could borrow and test fit. If that works ill buy a pair and get them widened to 8"

Try looking around for some cheap ba alloys, be a bit lighter than steelies. Wish i kept 2 of my old ones :

With the brakes, would they be the same as the PBR upgrade ones (the red ones)? If so 16" will fit on the back but not on the front

where can you get the steelies widened. Does any tyre place do it. Wouldnt the stock 16inch steelies be lighter than 16inch alloy wheels. I know alloy is lighter than steel but there is more of it in wheel.

Use a 16" rim with a 255 MT drag radial - dont drop the pressure below 22psi.

Less than 22psi may help with a launch but will eat up HP bigtime down the bitumen.

275 is a bit big and hungry on the HP too.
