SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian man convicted of his seventh drink-driving charge was spending about A$1,000 ($972) a week on beer -- enough to buy more than 2,500 small bottles a month, a newspaper said Tuesday.
The heartbroken construction worker began drowning his sorrows after breaking up with his partner five years ago, the Northern Territory News said, quoting his defense lawyer as telling a court in Australia's remote, tropical north. The magistrate declined to jail the father of four, Michael Leary, noting he had quit drinking since his latest arrest, but he banned Leary from buying or even holding a beer for 12 months. The magistrate also poked fun at Leary's favorite beer, Melbourne Bitter, in a part of the country where drinkers can be as loyal to beer brands as they are to football teams. "(That is) poor judgment on two counts there -- drinking that much and drinking Melbourne Bitter," magistrate Vince Luppino was quoted as saying. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080715/...p_CyEtdhGs0NUE That quote from the magistrate is golden, lol..

Nice quote!!
But $1000 a week on beer. I know people that would be happy to earn that much let alone spend that on beer. That really is a lot of beer. At a $40 carton that's 600 stubbies a week? 85 a day? 3.5 stubbies every hour? And that's with no sleep. I suppose if he's going to the pub he's going to pay more per beer, but still, that's a lot of beer.

I've been to Darwin and I have no trouble believing it... There's something about the weather that makes beer so much easier to drink... I'm not generally much of a drinker, but I managed to put away my fair share every day I was there. However, I was under instruction from Troppo (well known AFF Darwinite)... May have helped!

It just isn't possible. Now if he was spending $1000 a week at the pub that I can believe. Thats only about $143 a day. Between beer and pokies that is very possible. But not only on beer... unless he starts shoutin the bar once he hits his 6th pint.

Come on, its not exactly hard to work out.
'Its not my fault because i am addicted and therefore am not 100% responsible for my actions' 'My addiction is so serious that at times i've spent $1000 in one week just on beer' 'Because of this please let me off lightly, i wasn't paying attention the first 6 times i was busted for drink driving but i understand now' His lawyer has done his job admirably, bullshitted his way through to keep his client out of jail, then a US tabloid 'news' site has picked up on the 'aussie spends $1000 a week on beer' lie and used it to make the world think we are all drunk bogans. |

$1000 worth of beer is still HEAPS even if were at a pub. The guy would have to use a belt the size of the equator if it was personal consumption :

when i was drinking ( sober since sep 2000) i used to go through 30 to 40 cans every day the only reason i didn't drink more was $$$$. if he was at a pub the $1000 might be a slight exageration but not by much if he was anything like i was, it ends up consuming your life . I was huge, I lost 40Kg in 6 months when i was in rehab ( i'm still no light weight but not as bad as i was) so don't totally disscredit the story

isn't beer like $100/carton in places in the NT? not too hard to believe someone had 10 cartons a week imo.
