I played it a few weeks ago. Very addictive and great fun, but once you get the idea it's easy to finish it.

You can download some of the tower defence maps for Warcraft III off the blizzard site. This is very similar to those (so much so, they even use a lot of the same graphics)

would you advise spreading ya towers apart near the start and near the end for maximum damage early?

lvl 37.
Basically you build the buildings on the right hand side to hit all the minion things when they run through.
Then you upgrade them if need be, try and save your gold.. get through the levels to get wood, then get better buildings to do more damage.

I can't reach level 20! It's either I have next to no towers at the end or the towers deal too less damage =/

10626, level 39 finished. I ended up with about 600 gold and about 50 or 60 of the rockets.

Your first mod should be fire, then slowly replace your arrow towers with the fire ones. I kept about 400 gold in reserve so that when I got past level 21 I was able to get the first rocket. I didn't need to get my second rocket until about level 28. The last 4 or 5 levels I just kept buying rockets. I finished with all 20 and didn't lose one all game.
