Server Timeouts

I’m experiencing quite a lot of non-responses just from AFF the last day or two. Anyone else finding the same?

Nup, not experienced here, cb. Just the usual slow network at work, but that's applicable to all apps/sites.

Yesterday, not today.

Re: Server Timeouts

We did have a DDOS attack yesterday (twice) but that was resolved by mid morning.
Server loads have been a bit higher than normal this afternoon 4.63 (1 min) 6.36 (5 mins) 15.25 (15 mins) but nothing like the 6-70 they were yesterday - beyond about 55 it becomes unusable. Mind you, normal loads are < 5 and it's back down to 4.2 now.

Re: Server Timeouts

Yes there were a couple of lighter attempts yesterday evening but the automated processes in place caught most of them although even dealing with them takes server resources.

Here's what we saw statistically (24 hours to midnight last night):
Attempts to use known hacks by 29255 hosts were logged 39112 times

Status for the jail: sshd
- Currently failed: 71
- Total failed: 220218
Actions
- Currently banned: 120
- Total banned: 44210

Those numbers are sobering, especially if one is inclined to believe they come from a fairly select range of sources. Thanks for staying on top of it. :notworthy

Re: Server Timeouts

Yes. We had another 12k attempts this last 12 hours and while we get about 30% of them, they are rotating random IP addresses to avoid enough hits to be auto-blocked. I've just extend the time they remain blocked and reduced the number of consecutive attempts that triggers the block so we'll see how that goes.

The 10 minute outage just now was my fault. I enabled another one of the fail2ban checks without excluding the server local IP address which means it banned itself for 10 minutes so sorry about that!

I wonder if discussion about a certain manufacturer from a certain country that has a different political system from Australia is dragging in the flies.

Totally unrelated. The message relates to your browser not identifying the site as using SSL/TLS but we do in fact and you should be accessing the site using

https://fordforums.com.au and if you have any old bookmarks they need to be updated to avoid getting that message.

Hi Russell. Probably not related to the DDOS attacks, but I stopped getting email notifications for "reply to thread" and the subscribed forum updates ( 12 midnight each night) 2 or 3 of days ago, still not getting them now, Monday afternoon. Same thing happened quite a few months ago, lasted more than a month, then it just resolved itself one day, without me doing anything.
No biggy, I just check the "new posts" occasionally.

Re: Server Timeouts

That one is an easy fix - I've just restarted the sendmail server.

did we have one last night about 3am?.

Re: Server Timeouts

03:00-04:00 is the time the backup and daily maintenance jobs run and to get it done quickly, most of the server side resources are allocated to the task.
