Microsoft: Legit Windows or no updates
Aiming to crack down on counterfeit software, Microsoft plans later this year to require customers to verify that their copy of Windows is genuine before downloading security patches and other add-ons to the operating system, ZDNet reports. Since last fall the company has been testing a tool that can check whether a particular version of Windows is legitimate, but until now the checks have been voluntary. Starting February 7, the verification will be mandatory for many downloads for people in three countries: China, Norway and the Czech Republic. By the middle of this year, Microsoft will make the verification mandatory in all countries for both add-on features to Windows as well as for updates, including security patches. Microsoft will continue to allow all people to get Windows updates by turning on the Automatic Update feature within Windows. By doing so, Microsoft hopes it has struck a balance between promoting security and ensuring that people buy genuine versions of Windows. :gren: |
People will find a way around it. They always do.
|
people that do have legal versions will just put the updates on the net so you dont have to get verified
|
u can already get all of the updates via microsofts own ftp site.
|
buy Windows? That's preposterous!
|
its microsoft... there will always be a loophole for people to exploit and get updates hosted somewhere else for people without legit versions...

Easy way to get around it, get a copy that DEET (Department of Education *something* and Training) use... they can be installed and verified multiple times because they are used on school computers. |

those windows secutity updates are a crock anyway and you dont need them, all have to do is dont use IE (which you shouldnt anyway, way too insecure), have a up to date virus scanner and a non windows firewall, then you dont need any security updates, simple as that

I think Microsoft should give Windows out for free. Like say, AVAST antivirus software. The "Home Edition" is free (limited features but is forever free) where as the business versions cost money - that's where they would make most of the money anyway I reckon (How many home pcs have a pirated copy???)
