Hi guys,
Dont know if anyone remembers the thread I started about a month ago regarding AU2-3 XR6s/8s, well last night I picked up my new purchase: a silver AU2 XR8 manual. (I'll post a detailed thread with pics over the weekend) I was driving her today in semi wet conditions, and as I went to take a corner Ive taken a thousand times, the rear end let go very suddenly and drastically. I didn't take the corner fast at all as I'm not used to the car. Are the Dunlop SP 3000 tyres on the car to blame? I've heard nothing but bad things about these tyres. For as long as I can remember Ive had Hankook tyres and theyve always been sensational wet or dry (very predictable tyre). The two fronts on the XR8 are new, and the rears near new. So my dillema is: Do I swap near new Dunlops off the XR8 for the Hankook K104s on my old car (fronts 90%, rear 70-80%) Any opinions greatly appreciated! Cheers, Rob. |

I would definitely swap back to the Hankooks.

Care to elaborate? Is it cos the Dunlops are crap, or the Hankooks are so much better regardless?

Yeah i would go back to the Hankooks as well. I have got Gt Radials on my XR8 and to be totally honest I am thoroughly impressed with them, wet and dry. But go with what you know best.

I'm leaning heavily towards the Hankooks cos I know and trust them, the only reason Id keep the Dunlops is cos theyre so new, but the tyre condition wont matter much if I end up in a ditch or something...

Definitely go the K104s. I nearly bought a set myself ... but they were too dear from the places that quoted me ... hence why i got the Maxxis MA-Z1s.
If pricing was closer though ... it would have been a hard choice as I was tossing up whether to got the K104s or the MA-Z1's. The SP3000A's are okay-ish tyres ... but not the best.

I dunno about the 3000s, but when I had the old 9000s they sucked in wet when they worn.
If you got other tyres try those. The Toyo Transpaths I have now are very good, but as Peuty said it's good to stick with what you know.

Congratulations on your purchase! Nice car.
I had Dunlop SP3000s on my edited XR6Turbo with 240 rwkw and it had good grip around corners, wet or dry. I now have an AU2 XR8220 and it is much easier to provoke oversteer on corners. It may be less a product of tyres and more to do with the instant, off-idle torque of that great 220kw Windsor! |

Nice pick up with the car!
I'd swap straight over to the Hankooks, Dunlop tyres are rubbish IMO and I'll never ever use them again.

Thanks for the positive comments re: the car, and you havent even seen the pics yet!
So far most of you guys have confirmed my thoughts, the Hankooks are the better tyre. Looks like Im booking in a couple of cars for a tyre swap... |

my au only straight 6 but the best tyres i had were the dunlops and still are, i actually use to use the kuhmo's extas they sucked wet or dry, rear end out all the time.

Dont know about Kumho's, but Ive read a fair few comments (in the past) on FF from people with T-series and BA XRs who swapped to Hankooks and were very happy. That was the reason I got them on my E-Series cars, and to put it simply- those 4 tyres were like children to me!

got dunlop sp3000s on my xr8 220 found these tyres to be fantastic they are great in the wet no probs at all

The Dunlops on these cars are crap. I was so glad when I killed mine. I found after they go down to about 60% grip they are just useless.

Most peoples views are that the Dunlops are rubbish, i have K104's on my car and they are great.

Jeez some of you guys must drive hard...
I've used a BA XR6 for a couple of trips away and it had the original SP3000s on it. On the second trip I was hammering up Cunninghams Gap in the wet and I was most impressed with the way they gripped. They had around 24000k's on them at the time so were well over half worn. I'd never buy them though... way too noisy for me. |

The new dunlops on the front of mine or ok noise wise, but the back ones (that have very little wear) are pretty noisy.
The whole time Ive used Hankook tyres, theyve only been noisy when I wore a weird groove in a front set (from hard cornering) |

Dunlop's that I've taken a close look at on family cars (ultra high performance ones) have a harder compound and I've never liked them.
I'm a yokohama man these days. Don't care if it's 350 for a tyre, the top of the range models have always given me sensational grip in all conditions. Lucky that the car only sees daylight about 70 days a year now. The soft compound sure does wear down quick.

I just got a set of BFG and they are good. The car had some chinese things on it 235/17/45 and they were rubbish.I had them for a week and punted them ,near new.I got the BFG's for 165 fitted at Jax. They ere 200 plus tyres , but the guy bought them in in bulk. Very happy with them.
