G'day man,
you might want to PM Duffman, I think he's already been there and done that with his AU II Forte mate.

Having a Series III the odometer is stored in the ECU not in the cluster (like previous models). I will be putting one in my wagon for AU Falcon day. The change in speedo from 220 to 240km/h is calibrated in the cluster. There are a few wires you have to change. I have a wiring skematics that LG put up on how to do this mod. Now I just have to find it.

Facts
The speedo, is calculated by the Cluster. The odometer is stored in the Cluster. More specifically the eprom. What you can do: Series I Cars cannot put in Series II Clusters Series I Cars can put in High Series SI Clusters Series II Cars can put in High Series SII/III Clusters To Swap: To put a high series cluster in a low series car. You need to do a few things: - Change some pinouts in the plug - Add a Oil Pressure Sender (*) - Put the correct kms on (+) - Install a Windscreen Washer Bottle with Sensor Installing the Windscreen Washer Bottle, w/ Sensor is not neccessary, you will just get a low Washer level warning when you start up. (*) Supposably, low series car's are meant to have an Oil Pressure Switch. This means it either tells the car, that it has pressure or not. An Oil Pressure Sender, is like a sensor, which is how the High Series Cluster's can have a guage. I found out that with my car, that it had an Oil Pressure Sender. My only guess is that AUIIIs got them. So you may need one you may not. (+) If you are handy with electronics, you can swap the eproms over. The odometer/kms are programmed into the eprom. If you break the eprom, then your only option is to take the Cluster to VDO (or Ford maybe) to install a new eprom and program the eprom to the correct kms. Of course, you will need some proof, and they will charge you for it. I have a few documents, of the pinouts, that need to be changed. Do a search and you might find them. Otherwise i'll post it up again. All in all, it's a bit of hassle. If your not intermediate->advanced in electronics. I would pay someone to do it. It's well worth it. The feeling of the dash being much more sportier, and the colour. Not to mention the extra readouts, of Voltage, Oil Pressure, Gear Selection. Cheers

LG ... top info there.
Yes the oil pressure sender is needed from Ford .... and it's a PITA to change as well ... as I have done one .... using jackstands and a creeper ... bastard of a job. Reason I replaced my oil pressure switch on the low series as it was leaking (actually spraying oil everywhere). The high-series as a sender and is three prong from memory for the gauge to read more info ... the low series is a single pin switch for the dummy light on the dash. Hope that helps.

Oh ... anyone out there was a SII low series cluster they don't want ... I need to test to see if my fuel gauge in the cluster is telling porkies or not.
Took my current one out to test ... and found there's only 2 plugs in the back of it ... no way of testing it ... dammit. Also found it took me 30 minutes to figure out how to take the cluster out ... when in actual fact it's a 1 minute job to do it. Oh ... just wondering ... I have a blank switch panel to the right of the steering coloumn on the ute .... I was wondering if it was foor boot release and fuel filler release??? Seeing as I have a ute ... I don't require them (has cabling already in the back of the panel though (might be my new fog light switch panel).

They only made two oil senders right across the range from the EF onwards. one for the switch and one for the guage setup. I checked the parts catalogue last week.

I know this is an old thread, but maybe someone can help me anyway... If I want to replace my S1 Fairmont cluster with a S1 Tickford cluster, is it a straight swap and will everything work as normal (except obviously the odometer reading)? Any input would be appreciated! Cheers, Matt.

Hey matt. It should be a straight swap, and yes your right. The odo will be different. You will need to swap over your eproms. Or get a new one installed and get it reprogrammed.
What speed limit was on the AU1 XRs? If it was 220, then you should just be able to swap masks. Or if you want it for the Tickford Wings, get some custom White ones made up? But afaik, it should plug straight in! Cheers
