Is this TV any good?

its seems very cheap for the resolution etc, but what about DSE (dick smith electronics) brand? Are they good? Who is the original manufacturer?

Or would I be better off with something like this,

I have seen a similar model i think with slightly higher contrast ratio, anyway acer tv's any good?

preferably approx $1500 - less would be nice, possibly $2000

Any ideas greatly appreciated!!!!

but i have no idea what 3LCD is? ....

BTW when HD-DVD and/or blu ray happens i assume that will be at full hd 1920 x 1080 or whatever so unless the tv native res is that then it won't be making full use of it, but i guess if the tv is 81-94cm or something at 1366 would probably look as good as say 50 inch at 1920?...dunno.

Ill give you a short explanation. 3LCD simply means the projection unit within the TV has 3 chips to process the three colours that are seen by the naked eye, Red, Green & Blue ( all the other colours the eye sees is a blend or combination of one or more of these colours), so each 1 of the 3 chips will only focus on the colour is is there to produce ( 1 chip for RED, 1 for GREEN and 1 for BLUE.) There are other rear and front projection TV ( and camcorders for that matter) that have only 1 LCD for the Red, Green & Blue processing. This system relies on electronics to have the LCD chip continuously and rapidly switch between these 3 colours so fast it cant be detected by the human eye, but it is not perfect. Ever heard of the rainbow effect? Well that's another story! Buy a TV that looks good to YOUR eyes, forget about most of the hype on the brochures. Good Luck!

Generally from normal seating distance away from the screen most people can't really see the difference between 1366 x 768 compared to 1920 x 1080 but no doubt as more material is released in true HD (1920 x 1080) your extra spent hard earned may pay dividends. How close will you be seated to your screen?

A 1200:1 contrast ratio is plenty enough for a tv imo (unless it is a rear projection tv), you only really need higher contrast ratios than that for projectors projecting in daylight. Im still reluctant to spend my money on a plasma or lcd yet , imo the technology is still too new , and they run too hot for an electronic device ! ( you can see a short life term coming from them ! ). Also the majority of lcd's and plasmas i have seen missing pixels or complete lines is enough to tun me off them for now, i'll stick to my projectors for now ty

Hi I made a thread virtually identical to this one about a week or two ago.

That Samsung is an unreal unit and comes with a three year warranty and built-in HD. I see you want it for gaming - the Samsung units usually come with "game mode" too (the one above does)... You can pick them up for $1700 without haggling, but if you go to www.digitalcentre.com.au you can pick them up for roughly $1750 and get $190 cash-back.

I just measured the distance from my face to tv and its about 3m or 9 feet.

here it therefore equates to at least 42 inch screen according to these guys... :(

I own the Samsung, and personally I think its farkin brilliant. About the only thing I don't like about it is the left had side has a slight halo effect from the Cold Cathode, but unless your watching black on black, you don't ever see it. If your anal about these things and watch alota horror movies, you do see it.

Game mode off or on, makes little difference as near as I can tell ... but you DO need to mess with the 'sharpness' setting, it pre-processes the image and adds halo's to all the objects on the screen, makes people look like they have ghostly outlies, dropping it to 10 or below makes a world of difference.

Yeah I have waited a long time to buy one and i still have no idea how reliable they are really but they must have been making them for a few years now?

And I think it is important to check the manufacturers policy on dead pixels etc, most of their policies seem pretty good, don't know if that was always the case though.

sharpness setting > You get a ring of light around objects

The cold cathode light is responsible for producing all backlight behind the LCD panel. In the samsung in question the tube is located on the far left hand side, and as such, has a visible bright patch on the left hand side when viewing a very dark scene or black background. Mind you, your hard pressed to find an LCD without said effect. Personaly I don't think it detracts from the screens quality, it's just visible if you watch black on black scenes in movies, but even then your watching the action and not the screen ;p

This is my HT setup.

Samsung is excellent IMO.

I have seen the effect Mental was saying about, but you have to see things black on black for it to come thru.

I was gonna settle for the 32" but I when I saw the 40" I couldnt resist.

My sofa is about 3 metres away from the TV which is the minimum I could be for a TV that size I was told.

I am very happy with it.
