Default Rust on my baby

Hey everyone,

I have noticed a few quite noticeable rust spots on the rear of my bonnet. As of late they have been getting more prominent. The rust spots seem to be under the paint and clear coat. My car is a 2002 BA XR6 and I am the second owner and also the factory warranty and second hand dealer warranty is up as well.I have had the car for over a year now. I was just wondering if Ford have a lifetime warranty on paint/body? If not i'm happy to throw a few dollars at it to keep it up to my standard. Pics are as follows from my phone:

Looks like the drain holes in the bootlid might be blocked, thus allowing water to build up and oxidise the metal like in the photos. Have a chat to Ford as if I remember correctly, they have a 10 year panel perforation warranty.

shouldn't be too hard to fix, but they'll probably need to respray the whole bootlid. i'd say $300-$400???

Thats sucks. I see rust on my 40 year old car and cry. I dont see how that could happen so quick or how it could block up.

5 year warranty on rust and corrosion, get it to Ford asap in case you miss the warranty, even if you're a few weeks late they may still do it in good faith.

^ ^ ^ ^ As above, the 5 year perforatioin Corrosion Warranty is valid for 5yrs or 60 months "FROM THE FORD WARRANTY COMMENCEMENT DATE" in other words, if your car was first registered on after 2nd may 2002 (depending when you get it to ford to report it) it will be covered under warranty.

Get it to a ford dealership as soon as possible, to report it, and have it inspected. And as b2tf mentioned, if you're a bit late, go cap in hand and play on sympathy and you might just get it done, if not for free, but maybe with ford coming to the party with a few dollars...

You have nothing to lose. Go for it.

wish you the best of luck getting it fixed ford dealer wouldnt cover the crows feet that has appeared on the read bumper of my 2003.

He's got a few months yet - BA's didn't come out until October...
I used to have a 2002 BA Ghia and that had significant rust around the hinges on the bootlid as well as both ends of the chome strip above the number plate and a couple of places under the bonnet. Ford did fix them all up though so wasn't a problem in the end so hopefully they'll do the right thing here.
I just couldn't believe there'd be that much rust in a car that was only 2.5 years old when i bought it. when i sold my 18 year old TE cortina it had less rust in it than the BA had... a bit of a worry if you ask me. dunno if its a common BA thing or not???

The drainholes in the bootlid of my car were plugged with rubber bungs, effectively stopping any water drainage.

Rather than just taking the bungs out, to keep originality and not have the hole edges exposed, I decided to punch holes through the sides of the bungs just up from the groove where it sits in the drainhole, to allow any water to drain out.

Yes that is certainly perforation that should be covered by warranty.

Just wondering though, if there was previous panel repair done, whether it would still be covered. That corrosion seems consistent with the bootlid having been repaired. Have a close look further out and up the edge of the bootlid, there seems to be corrosion there also.

Since I was already off to the Ford service department today, I thought I would also get them to check out the common creaking problem in the steering. Then I remembered the document on Aus Ford forums outlining the description of the problem.I read it and it was exactly my problem.

Here is the document:


I printed it off, thinking that instead of rambling on about the problem and them guessing and trying to work it out, I could just show them the document and they would go cheers, thanks for making it easier for us. I just wanted it to make it easier for them and me.

Well this morning when I showed the service lady the document the sh!t hit the fan. I was asked all these questions like 'What are you doing with that?' 'You're not suppose to have that' 'Where did you get that from?' bLah blah blah. I acted dumb and said I got it off the net somewhere. The service lady said she would show her manager the document and stuff. I really didn't care cause all I wanted was them to fix my car. I knew it was out of warranty and fully aware i would have to pay for the service.

After her little episode I told her about the rust on the back of my boot. The lady said something more stupid. ' Your car is a 2002 BA falcon?' I said 'yep' her reply was 'Well I dont think your car will be covered under the rust warranty cause your car is 5 years old' ' I was like ummm Ba's didn't some out till september 2002 and mine was manufactured in November 2002, so i have like 6 months left'. She didnt say anything after that. I thought Ford employees are suppose to know about their products?, obviously not. Anyway that is my rant for something that I thought would be easy, but turned out anything but. The car goes in next wednesday and i'll keep you informed with the progress

my parents BA series 2 fairmont ghia had rust under the chrome trim above the numberplate as well as rust around the edges of the reverse lights either side of the number plate was fixed under warranty by ford

This rust happens on just about every Fairmont Ghia, and sometimes other models too. Has been mentioned several times on this Forum, which resulted in finding corrosion on my car also which I fixed myself, so I know it was done properly. Caused by contact between the chromed plastic and the bodywork. The plastic trim should be packed out using rubber washers to keep the chrome away from the painted surface.Theres also a Ford TSB on this.

The rust featured in this thread is quite different however, which unfortunately I suspect is due to previous repairs.

Ive got same Colour XR6 MKII - not sure if significant but have rust in the bootwell and door Frame - have a Territory also with rust in the pillar.

Luckily I still have warranty but i figure it is standard issue.
I suppose all that performance, ride quality and space we get for the low price - cant argue too much but I think it is just an acceptable manufacturing comprimise that some cars will get and some wont.

Have a look at cheap american built cars if you think I am being harsh.

Get the car checked out asap and invest in some rust guarding of some sort.

XB's used to creak in the front end, All models regularly leak from the rear main seal and RUST. These are Ford character features and part of the ownership experience. A constant reminder of you allegiance to the brand. The more things change........
