Glebe represent!!

Redfern - I wouldn't suggest it.
Glebe - I wouldn't suggest it (Unless you are up at Glebe point).
Balmain/Rozelle/Leichardt/Drummoyne - Good Areas i would suggest it.
Parramatta/Hornsby/Blacktown - Wouldn't suggest it, too far.

Of course it will depend on what part of the Shire and yeah worst case scenario would be over an hour. If I sleep at my GFs place in Sutho, the train I get is the express 35mins from Sutherland to Central

camden/picton is probably one of the best rural area with a close proximity to the city. like someone else said, the trains are pretty reliable on the lines out that way. and it only takes 30mins to get to the beach from campbelltown and about 20mins from picton, and there is no traffic to the beach for either. 100km/h roads all the way to wollongong.
Only bad thing about Picton or Camden way is the 2.5-3 hour trip each way in peak hour if you were to drive. Most people drive to Macarthur/Campbelltown station which takes 30 mins or so and sleep on the train for an hour to get to the city. Trains are fairly reliable but infrequent outside peak. And housing is not too bad in Wollongong that it would make more sence to live down there than be attracted to the 20min trip from Picton. It would also result in a faster travel time driving to the city from there as well on the F6.

LOL I wonder how many interstaters and country people are sitting here shaking their heads reading about 3 hour travel times.

We lived in Caringbah for a year which was really good. We were only 2km to Cronulla beach and about 3-4km from Miranda which has a really big Westfield. The train goes right through from Cronulla to the City and although its about a 40 minute trip, Its awesome on days off.

Live where you can afford !!! I live in outer west and commute to Hornsby which takes 40 to 60 minutes not using pay to drive roads, in company vehicle...
