so im getting a sump off whooligan and then my engine with a good lookover, will go in my escort.

now next is paint and body.. ive already done half the bodywork so its getting close to paint...

now what i need to know is, how do the silver + black strips come off the side of the car? mine is a 4 door 1600.

should i take them off or just cover them for paint?

I always thought side strips like that are stuck on, I could be wrong. If they are stuck on, either push it out in the sun so the panels get hot and therefore weaken the glue and run some fishing line behind them, or get a hair dryer out to heat up a patch. Once you can lift an edge, they should peel off. Either way, if you are going to paint it, remove them and if they are a must have, fit new ones later.

I remember taking these side strips off my old mk2 1600....once you take them off, there are no markings as to where they go back on.
I'd reccomend leaving them off, your escort will look better .

Indeed I do, this is my old 1600 after id removed the strips and polished off the marks from the glue....
