Exclamation Do 20's really fit on an AU?

Ok - first thread. Hope someone can help - bought a set of 2nd hand 20's (they'd only done 500kms) for my AU wagon - BUT the fronts don't seem to fit. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I doing something wrong? Is there something special I need to be doing? Guys at tyre shop (who wanted to sell me $3000+ wheels & tyres) said 20's would fit! Thanks. Mumma's XR8 AU wagon

If the offset is right 20s will fit, plenty of people have done it but you'd struggle to fit anything wider then 225s with them.

When I put them on, the tops are touching on upper ball joint.

They've got 245/35 rubber.

There's your problem. You need to run 225/35 or 225/30 on the front and you can fit just about anything on the back (245/30/20 is recommended).

OT - I am intrigued by your username. Do you have a V8 wagon with XR front? That has always been one of my dream cars!! I had an I6 wagon with XR front, but not the same oomph as a V8.

Nankang sell a 245/30/ZR20 that will fix the problem and also has the correct load rating.
I had the same problem on the ute but the Nankangs fixed that.

Yep - just spent last few hours browsing AU posts and saw a few threads on 20" and the problem with tyre size. Bugger, bugger, bugger!!! Bought these tyres & rims so I didn't have to spend big bucks on newbies. Oh well, start again!

Re: my username - I have an AU wagon that now has an XR8 Tickford HP engine, 5-speed box, nose & bonnet. Loved my black 5-speed EB XR8, but traded it on the AU wagon a couple of years ago as it was getting a bit too old. Then got use to & needed the space of a wagon with a MX & BMX-mad son & new baby (prams, etc.) but wanted my XR8 again, so hubby & mates did conversion over a long weekend. Put it in shed late on the Friday night as stocko and it fired up first thing Sunday morning as XR8 - straight off engine as we were replacing from extractors back! Beautiful noise to wake up to!! Love it, love it, love it! Had few hassles - but sweet as now! Just need new feet and she'll be purdy. Prob need to get new paint job, but not in too much of a hurry cos' there's still twits in shopping centres who can't open their car doors properly or drag their bags against it! Might wait till both kids in school & I can park a mile away from everyone else again without worrying about making kids walk too far LOL!

Thanks for help with tyres guys! Mumma A.

try giving some tyre shops a ring as they may give you a good discount on the tyres for swapping with the other ones you have.. (as that size fits commodores fine... OR you can keep them and use them on the rear when the current tyres wear out)

the tyre shop i went to ordered me 4x 245/35/R20s and they didnt fit..
they got me a set of 225/30/R20 nankangs and they ran fine but were rough as guts and the rim stuck out quite precariously when going up driveways etc it tended to snag the rim if you didnt turn tight enough

today got a pair of 245/30/R20 nankangs ..
ride is 90% better than before ..
no tram lining/bump steering what ever you want to call it when your car trys to steer it self into every divit in the road lol

AND completely legal WOOT!!!

the rears get swapped tommorow as the tyre shop didnt order me a set of 4

oh and i got mine thru bob jane at morayfield for $295ea (a shop called stylish wheels wanted 285ea but it was at inala i think so just told bob jane and they gave me the price of 295 so that was good

most shops want around 320-330ea

good luck mate!!

Given up on those rims - taking them back to the guy & getting dosh back. By the time we got the rears balanced & fitted, bought 2 new tyres for the fronts, I might as well have bought brand new and gotten something decent. So we're biting the bullet and hubby has gone down this morning to Qld Best at Geebung to get me some brand newies rims & tyres - hope his taste is close to mine, cos' I won't get to see them!!!

The 2nd handies were a bit too blingy for me, I'd prefer Koya Inox Kahn's and have a race car look, but beggars can't be choosers!!! Need new rubber to drive on TODAY, not monday. I really need to learn not to leave things until the last minute. Oh well!

Will get pics on asap. Mumma A.

the only issue i had last night was when i was turning into harrys diner the front tyre grabbed the inner lip of the front guard so i need to get them rolled ASAP
but for now a few belts from the ol attitude adjuster should fix it lol

Great to see a woman who loves her car, and a V8 at that!

XR8 wagon, JC isn't the only one who'd love one of these!

This thread of course is useless without pics! LOL!

so 20inch 235 35 would fit front of the AU ? Tyre place today said that you have to fit 225 30 to front and will handle crap, wheels would be slighty turned in,wear inside tyres out quick and will scrap.

Is this correct ?

Seems plenty of people can fit 235/35 20inch to front no troubles ?

I run 235/35 19 and the 35 profile is a bit high without rolling the guards, As I have found out with the lip of the guard now pointing down towards the tyre. Even though I have the wheels on for ages its just these new Falkens seem to be a bit higher maybe.

Like I said before, 245/30/ZR20 are the go , you are hung up on the 235's aren't you. Plus my ute is lower than your ute as Adam and I compared heights a while back.
245 fronts

275 rears

Heres one you may like, how it looked in it's former glory; :evil3:

well the rims i have found comes with that rubber and dont have much choice lol did you get your gaurds rolled ?
Its so hard trying to find the right wheels to suit her lol I got about 100photos on cd of betty thanx to a memember :-)
Yes your ute is lower, betty doesnt really sit that low so i guess i would have to get sum lower springs to top the wheels off ?

I noticed you got the TS50 mesh aswell ? heard really hard to get, expensive.Bettys got broken so your lucky to have yours:-p
