Have a look here, http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11210180
Most of the info is relevant. The best of them were the diesel turbos that only came out towards the end of the run. Petrol ones make a 351 look like it sips petrol.
Regards,
Tote

G'Day Booka.

I have a '96 GQ Trayback 4.2D.

It's a great beastie - gets a decent flogging (farm truck) and takes everything thats thrown at it. The engine and gearbox are both tough as nuts and provided they are cared for, will last many hundreds of thousands of kilometres.

Rust is the real killer of these things. Not that they really have a problem with rust but everything else is so tough that this is simply the weakest of a bunch of very strong links!

Watch for rust in the inner guards (esp door hinges), vent-thingo in the B pillar exterior and around the turret. Be a little wary of ex-mining or utilities trucks as these will have had a hard life, but if you find a good one at the right price then all is good (mine is ex qld banana plantation and has been worked hard, but only cost me 8 grand so you get what you pay for)

If you get one with the stock skinny steel split rims, put some fattys on it - greatly improves ride and handling.

In a nutshell:

Pros:
Tonka tough
relatively good fuel economy
Big torquey diesel engine (petrol is also god, but not as good as diesel)
did I mention tough?

Cons:
Slow
In most cases - smokey
no cupholders (:P)

I just sold my 4.2 efi GQ wagon, dual lockers, 37" tyres.

They are awesome offroad, even standard, cheap for aftermarket parts, and they use 25l/100 lpg, or 20l/100 petrol, in my auto.

4.2 litre carb motor very thirsty as is the 3 litre . 2.8 Turbo diesel is a good thing but the gearbox is different from the 4.2 diesel box and is a bit weak for towing.

A 4.2 litre manual petrol on lpg would be good, but for longevity and tractibility off road the 4.2 diesel is the go.

Some earlier models need a shim kit in the front end , and check for rust around the rear side windows , and turret.

My ex boss has a 95 model, with a 2.8ltr turbo 6, the thing only uses 7ltrs/100ks!, it runs on nothing!!! and it still has a good amout of power to, once she starts to spool shes a real goer!

Altho if you want full on power get the 4.2ltr TD
