Default Another Smartlock/shield question

Hey guys my XR8III didnt start for me yesterday morning before work..IT started then cut out, it restarted then cut out, then had all dash lights but wouldnt crank but could hear fuel pump prime up....I noticed the smartshield light flashing fast when the the ignition was on..I figured the key has died..I didnt have my spare as the missus had all ready left for work..Anyways when the wife got home it started for her with her key, but still wouldnt start for me..My questions are is it possible for the key to drop out of sink with the BCM or has the key died? Do these keys have a limited life span? Also i assume i have to get it to a FORD dealer to get a new key programmed does any1 no the round abouts price?

Thanks Andrew
