I have recently purchased a Ford Fairmont Ghia from a car dealer (in Vic) for which I don’t have any service history or related information. Just wondering if there is any way I can trace back the history of this car as I would like to find some information – like if the car had any accidents in the past or what was the odometer. I have found that there is Motorcar Traders Complains Line (1300 558 181) where I can call and lodge a complain, but this would be only if there’s something wrong, so is different. I have tried with VicRoads but they can’t help on that. Is there an organization to contact or a web site where I can get this type of check done?
Thank you. Kind regards, Asi102 |

If there were any service stickers on the window or any auto trans service stickers on the driver side door frame they might give you a date and KM for next service which could help to verify history. Also most tyre places keep rego and KM reading for cars when they get new tyres, but you would have to know where it last got tyres.
Is there something wrong with the car that makes you suspicious of its KM reading? What model and year is the car? |

Mate, ring vic roads. They can tell u how many times the cars had ownership transfer (without names) in what region etc, weather its had a plate change, and weather its been classed as a repairable write off (viv cert.). You might get some punjabi dreamer telling you it cant be done, but be firm & keep trying until you get someone helpful.
On the other hand, using the chassis number FOMOCO can tell you which dealer sold the car new, then chase up details/ history through them. But all this should have been done b4 the purchase. Dont know about you, but you dont marry a girl without knowing where shes been. Anyhow i hope this helps ya. |

fte50 is right. Just go to Vicroads and ask for a history check. It's about $30 for a print out. It tell you most things about the history, but not everything.

if you want to check whether the car has been in a an accident there is a place in the city (melb) which does complete checks with written report for around $300, any decent mech or panel beater should be able to give you something though.
and last time we looked at cars they had the details of the previous owner on the paper with the vehicle details. i don't know whether they still do this though? |
