Default New Ford 6.2 litre V8

These comments are from the American forum "Modular Fords Forum" a few days ago …

An associate of mine was working out some production designs for the Volvo/Mack power train production line with an outside manufacturer and while visiting their facilities noticed four pallets with new ford 6.2 liter blocks and four pallets of heads. He inquired into why the manufacturer had the engines and he was informed that they were designing the assembly line for ford to produce them for the mustang possibly in a mach or boss trim.

They are not stroked 5.4s; they are a totally new platform! Now named the "BOSS" engine line, previously named the "Hurricane" engine line! In a nut shell they are very similar to the OHC engines we have now, with IIRC 4.5" bore spacing now. They will be capable of up to 7 liters of displacement, and that is one of the test bed engines that Don Bowles is campaigning for Roush under the name "Project 777" which is 7 liter, 700 HP, at 7000 rpms.

We have done some work on the 6.2. It’s a nice engine but the thing is huge and heavy! It’s wider then a 4valve so not sure what the application will be as far as a Mustang. It’s slated for truck production to get rid of the V10. The new V6's with the twin turbos will probably find their way into the Mustangs before the 6.2 if even the new V6 makes it due to the fuel prices.

Heads are very wide for a SOHC engine.

7L, 700HP, 7000 rpm, $7 a gallon, 7 year lifespan, 7 tons, 777" wide, 7 sold.

I dont know what to think. one hand its a huge V8, on the other, I think its about time ford did something worthy of the boss name, ie, lighter and faster and not bigger and thirstier. the BOSS 302 won because it was a balanced engine for the time. This cant win any serious prizes. I still want one though.

The 3V is big enough thanks _2:

I have to agree with Jayden, smaller and lighter please, at least in external dimensions anyway.

Be fine in an F-Series. But in an XR8 or GT?

No thanks.

Its supposed to be truck use only, so will most likely never be used in a passenger vehicle.

This 6.2L hurricane engine is going to be the powerplant for the limited edition 2009 FPV GTHO with the power output over 400kw!

There will be no GTHO in 2009 Rob Darret mentioned a 6.2 for the GTHO a very long time ago and things have changed both here and in the US since.

The 5.0 litre has a better chance to replace the Boss 5.4 than the 6.2 does. Fact is Bill Osborne has already mentioned the 5L in an interview he's had regarding the replacement for the Boss. He went on to say forced induction is a possibility.

In NA form the 5L is good for 330kW with direct injection. Sky's the limit with twin turbo

The 6.2, although initially designed to slot into passenger cars, will be used to power the F series trucks. The smallest F series truck to use this will be the F250, so the 6.2 won't even be available in the F150. The decision not to use it in passenger vehicles is because of the recent CAFE regulations, which impose very stringent economy figures. Something the 6.2 won't achieve.

i read in a article that maybe 2013 possibly a gtho. But anyway i agree with other members about it being to late for a 6.2 unless ford works a few miracles and runs it on fresh air . but also im all for them experimenting and exploring options.

No the 6.2L will be for trucks only. The 5.0L V8 will get twin turbos to keep the performance fans more than happy.

Turbos and direct injection are Fords new economy push with the EcoBoost engines, 4 cylinders and V6's are nearing production, with a V8 a possibility. They will deliver performance with economy.

The 6.2 probably won't even be in production by then, neither will a GTHO. 2011 will be the earliest chance to see a GTHO, if we even see one at all.
