Default Dash is driving me nuts!

Guys

before i take a sledgehammer to my dash, was just wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with a real squeaky rattle right up under the windscreen. There is the panel there that has the vents in it for the window demister and it is underneath that, I am thinking it is possibly a clip or something that holds the heater pipes etc on there?

Any ideas?

nah, no ideas on that, but my glove box opener rattles, grrr

i would think it would be clipped in, but not sure if you could get to it without removing the whole dash...

If you sledge hammer the dash your mind after with a thousands squeaks will block out the sound and you won't hear it anymore.
Describe the sound better. Is it metalic? Is it like a loose panel? Post it so we can assist you better.

i have an anoying squeak in the center of the dash where the plastic face of the a/c controls and stereo surround rubs against the vinal of the dash....just turn the music up a bit louder and i cannt hear it.....one day i may do something about it.....but not overly concerned.

My wagon has a squeak right up near the windscreen too,if you've had a bit of a push and pull around the area, try the age old remedy of a full can of silicon spray it works wonders on sqeaks, thats all FORD use for any thing that wont fix it self

I had one in a similar area, and found that it went away with an air freshner mounted on one of the center air vents.

I have the same.

Its funny, you hardly hear Taxi's squeaking in that area - therefore as somebody above mentioned, it has to be the effects of a lowered, stiffer (and hard driven) car.

I tried this today. used about half the can. Only rattles now over large bumps (sh!te sections of road). But my shocks are r.s so that dont help. But definetly quietened it down.

The cover youre talking about is held by philips head screws. When you get a chance Undo the screws and remove the panel. Then check the tightness of the retaining bolts for the dashboard to the firewall. Forget the sledgehammer ..find the problem.

Pull that section out and stick some double sided tape in there Austin,

Or you can harden up. :

Personally, I don't bother chasing the squeaks and rattles I might make things worse.

I had an annoying rattle that sounded like it was coming from my dash, I couldn't find it for the life of me. About 6 months later i found the rattle , it was coming from the rear vision mirror vibrating !!!, changed it and all ok now. It realy sounded like it was coming from the dash area at the time, it was driving me nuts.

i just covered my winscreen and speaker a bit, (mine was on the passenger side near the little tweeter), and went to town sprayed absolutely everything up and around there- including dash spear! Then wiped off excess with a towel. worked great!

When I first got my xr8, I had this noise and I managed to track it down with much perseverance! It is not actually coming from inside the car but on the outside. If you look at the plastic cowling that touches the windscreen right by the windscreen wiper arms and give it a push you will hear the noise. I used silicone grease on the back of the plastic which lasts for a while. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Simon

ps. I have a great fix for the rattly centre air vents if anyone is interested.

I've got exactly the same squeak in mine as well... It also looks to me like that trim/panel right at the front of the dash pad is distorted... Maybe from the heat of our WA sunshine. :(

I want to fix the noise because squeaks/rattles drive me nuts. If I want to hear a car falling apart I drive my VN.

Thanks to Stav for correctly picking it - loose bolt where the dash bolts to the front end of the car. Put a bigger washer on it and tightened it right up - squeak gone for now but the real test will come going to work tomorrow.

have the same problem with my car, but it's not low or stiff or hard driven...

i have found a quick fix for when it really annoys me, the handy moist towelette (spelling?) from KFC. just jam said moist wipe (still in the packet) between the 2 panels and walla no noise (for a little while)

-tim

who will spend some spare time fixing problem properly now that i know how..
