Default NZ to get RS Focus

Good move by Ford NZ, shame it's a bum dragger though.

Quote:
Ford NZ has been deluged with inquiries about the new three-door since it broke cover at the British International Motor Show a couple of months ago.

Similarly, the car's appearance at the Paris show last week - its first public outing on mainland Europe - created more interest. It goes into production early next year.

"We have had people wanting to buy it from the start," said Ford NZ managing director Richard Matheson. "We will bring it in, but in limited numbers."

Only from a shipping point of view. as the import laws are exactly the same no matter where the car comes from. And because the Focus is sold locally here, you'd have a very hard time getting SEVS approval, so you probably couldn't get it licensed. I think the only way you'd get one here and registered for use on public roads is to own one in Europe for the required time (I think it's either 6 or 12 months), and then bring it in as a private transfer.

If you could be bothered doing the work (a big if), I reckon getting SEVs approval wouldn't be too hard on either the old RS or the new RS.

Reputation is an important part of the process, and the amount of articles, reviews and coverage both of those cars have generated is enormous. The older RS would be easier at this point as Ford could clearly verify they wouldn't be bringing it into the country.

I know it's easier if the Focus wasn't sold here at all, but the number of magazine articles you can generate demonstrates the specialty and enhusiast interest

You could be right...in the early days of SEVS you couldn't bring a car in if that shell was sold in any form (think earlier Type R civic), but that must have been loosened now, because there's EVOs coming in...
