Well as I type this, I have 30 mins left before the new owner comes to pick up my baby. :(
I'm off to the RAAF in January, and decided to get rid of her as I won't be driving a huge amount next year & I'd like to clear the debt I still had on it before my salary takes a bit of a hit! (officer training salary ain't great :P) It's just kind of hit me that...I'm going to miss her. It's almost like I'm losing a friend. In the 2 1/2 years I've had her, I've only needed to replace tires and a battery. Otherwise it's just been normal servicing. Almost feels like a betrayal after how well shes treated me. So am I a weirdo or what? Anyone else feel like this when selling their car? |

No... not weird at all.
I'm in the same boat. The Festiva is near on 10 years old now, she was my first 'big' purchase at 19 after working my *** off stacking shelves and paying my way through Uni at the same time. I just couldn't sell her, with close to 200,000km she would be next to worthless to anyone else, but truth be told there is not 1 thing wrong with her... She is like an old trustworthy friend, never let me down, got me out of many a sticky situation, and have been all over the joint together. I will eventually buy a 'real' car... but for now I don't have the heart to let go of my little yellow Festiva... |

The newer cars ..... not a second glance. Washed the BA XR the other day and relised it was blue. They are just used to get around. X series cars .... totally different story! They have character and almost a personality!

i totally agree, my subaru is currently sitting on a car trailor in lots of bits ready to go to the scrap yard.... i put so much time and money in to it as well, i will be honest and in the stripping process i have shed many a tear....
my ute may be faster and better in every way but it aint turbo and 27 years old with full character.

I felt the same when traded my BA XT Classic.....I bought it new in 2004 and had 64,000 trouble free kms when I let it go....so there was a tinge of sadness driving out of the dealership and saying goodbye for the last time.
However any sad thoughts quickly disappeared though after driving the GT down the M7 from Windsor. After finally getting home after the 45 minute drive the old car was resigned to the distant memory bin

We all get attached to certain things.
I used to get very attached to my toothbrushes, and would feel guilty when I threw them out. Currently, my older pair of tennis shorts (I've worn them for six years) has torn in about three places, and I just keep re-sewing them. I cannot throw them out. So comfy!

Yeah the older cars have more character.
I felt a bit down when I had to get rid of my XF, dropped the old girl down the tip to get crushed. It was my first car, got me through a few hairy incidents

Cracked the poops with her today after letting me down (first time ever really) and was very sure my answer was to get another and pass her along. As I look out my window and see her sitting there in the carport, I am back to my struggle of what I should be doing. It is not weird to get attached to your car, you spend so much time in them generally and when you are angry, sad, happy or whatever, they hear you (if you are anything like me anyway). So you share so many 'moments' with them that it is often hard to let go.

I played tennis for a month with the entire right seam of the shorts being ripped, so while I was playing tennis comp (twice a week) and training (once a week), my boxers were on full display. The only person who was bothered by it was my old man...the same person who has the most useless belt in the world. When he wears that belt, his pants fall down. The same person who bends over in the street and bares his backside crack to the world, and insists that nobody cares. So, I used the same excuse. It's funny how we refuse to throw such things away. If I could write a song about my shorts, I would. It would be a little like Homer Simpson's song, "When I was 17, I drank some very good beer, fake id, Brian McGee" etc.

when my XB Coupe got written off I kept it in the shed for 2 years before I would even let a part go from her. I was devistated when I eventually sent what was left of the shell to the crusher and I still get a little sad when I think about it now.

[start sarcasm] i dont get emotionally attached to my cars [/end sarcasm]
i could have cried when i saw my AU all smashed up, it was an awesome car..... mainly the memories in it and the back, i smashed the diff and melted the power steering pump and cooked the clutch and it still drove like the day it rolled off the assembly..... i still miss it just make the next as good, even though sometimes its impossible
