Why dont car manufacturers make a decent roomy twin cab ute, that a 6 footer could sit in the back seat in comfort. Have looked at the Ford / Mazda, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux. They are all fine until your kids turn 10 year old. I can see why people chop up 80 and 100 series cruiser wagons and Nissan Patrol wagons and turn them into twin cabs..............And yes, the F250 is a bit big........... end of rant... :

No, I looked at the new Navarra twin cab yesterday and if they just made the back seating section twelve inches longer it would be perfect and knowhere near as big as an F250

Yes, I have friends that the Dad had a crewman ute and the son bought an XR6 ute about 4 months later. The Dad ended up getting rid of the Crewman ute after driving the son's XR6. He couldn't beleive the difference in the drive and comfort of the XR6

Was the Triton the best of them? I heard they sacrificed the size of the tray a bit to provide more cabin room?

Unless you want a F250 sized ute, the comprimise is always going to be cabin space vs tray space. I for one went for the Ranger for the increase deck size over the cabin, and don't regret it.

I bet cutting up a Cruiser or Patrol Wagon wouldn't be cheap... Probably cheaper to just buy an F250 twin cab and be done with it.

The Hilux rear seat is very comfortable. My brother has the new model and have done a few trips in the rear with no issues at all.
When he was buying, he said it was by far the best in terms of rear room. If your 10 year old is not comfortable in the back of a Hilux than you must be breeding very big kids. |

When you say Triton, do you mean the current ML Triton? I ask becasue my Dad has one and I think there is HEAPS of room in the back. I am 6'2". You would have to be nearing 7' if you dont have enough room in the back of one of them. They have more room than a current Hilux I beleive.

I've found the front seats are just as bad in dual cabs, they're so skinny and I like to spread my legs out a bit.

got the dual cab new hilux for a work car
and while i dont sit in the back, there is plenty of room back there, my motorcucle helmet sits behind the seat on the floor and thats witht he front seat all the way back to stop it moving around, and there is plenty of grunt (im even considering getting one myself for my next car its that good) they are a little thirsty though, so just watch how heavy your foot is |

Go drive a Ranger, it makes the Hilux feel gutless.

Well there are some more options if you need a crew cab with a tray type back...
Not sure what your other needs are... - Land Rover Defender Crew Cab, - Ford Transit Crew Cab, - Mercedes Benz Sprinter (A bit big!)

Not that dear at all actually. Most places only charge around the 5 to 7k mark to do the chop itself. Thats drive in drive out. All painted and trimmed. Then you have to do the tray back. When you start extending the chassis to put a bigger tray on it starts getting dear but nowhere near the cost of buying an F250. |

My boss has a ML Triton Dual cab & theres plenty of room in the back for adults. Heaps more then my old Hilux. The ML Tritons are very ugly tho!

Now is the time when one realizes the purpose of an F150. F250 being too big, Ranger being too small. And this time next year, there will be the Boss 6.2 V8, 4.4 V8 diesel, and EcoBoost engine options.

Triton's are a little narrow bodied but rear legroom is best in class (in the ML model, MK was one of the worst in class)

Diesel or auto? I drove the Ranger diesel (auto) and while down low it feels like its gonna boogy when it gets mid range and above it was very ordinary.
