Default Horn Problem

So i was asleep in bed on saturday night, having a most wonderful sleep, and i wake up, i said whats that noise, and wifey says 'is that your car'?

And sure enough it was, the horn had stuck on. Very, very unimpressed (as im sure the neighbours were too) at it all. So i hit the horn button on the steering wheel and it stopped. This isnt the first time that this has happened, last time the air was very, very humid it did it too, but that was about a year ago. So i pulled out the relay anyway.

So i'm wondering, i guess its only two things it'd be, either the horn button in the steering wheel (do not want) or the actual horn itself behind the grille.

Opinions? is this a known problem? Is there a known fix?

#2 sons did the same a few months ago AU SR111 Bodge horn was full of crap and shorted out then fryed both the horn and relay . new twin horns from the supercrap and a new relay. all good so far, just a tip make sure your horn opening is faceing to the ground as his had turned upwards allowing water and crap to build up inside it ..

It will be the horn pad, not the horn itself.

same sort of thing happened whilst my daughter was driving my car a few years ago she turned a corner to get onto the bruce, and it went off the only way she could stop it was by hitting the pad every time it went off, anyway it turned out to be the air bag that was the problem, replaced the air bag and no further probs with it.

well if its possibly an airbag/horn pad thing and my steering wheel is very worn looking, i may as well just get a new wheel?

I have a 91 Telstar TX5 and the same thing happened yesterday morning. And several times before that earlier this year. Hitting the horn pad once fixes it.

The first time it happened was about 6 years ago and at that time it took the horn pad apart.
There are two contact membranes seperated by a insulating membrane of some foamy rubbery compound. This material disintegrates with age & especially when the car is left out in the sun.

I replaced the membrane with some thin plastic foam , with some suitable holes cut in
it so the membrane contacts can make, and it has worked for about six years now.

I am going to redo it now with some bubble wrap, which will it with some

I believe that the horn is triggered when the materila disintegrates and after a hot day the moisture returns during a cold night (usually early in the morning) and hence garaged cars will have less of a problem then those parked outside during the night!
I have only heard of Ford's having this problem (?). I have contemplated having a
(say) 10 second relay in line with the horn relay, so that it will not lock up permanently
and leave me with a dead battery and or very unhappy neighbours.

My car had/has the same problem... had to punch the wheel heaps to stop it... never used the horn again since :P
