someone attempting to steal my car!

hi all,
someone has tried to steal my car tonight i was inside with the door to my veranda open when i heard the noise to my door opening (destinct creaking sound) when i went out to see what was happening i heard what sounded like someone climbing my colourbond fence, i went downstairs and checked my car,
they managed to get my cars back door open,
what should i do ?
I cant afford an alarm for at least 2 weeks (biils)

Dont oil the hinges for starters. Id report it to the cops. Maybe one of those cheap flashing LED's will be enough to deter the blighter?

disable you engine as much as possible take out your rotor button, disconnect ignition wire on coil and put a rag in the carby. basically theft-proof it because you can basically replace anything inside it but if they take it they'll f it. alternatively stay up for the next couple of nights with a bat handy.

Without an alarm there isn't much you can do unfortunately unless you stay up every night :(
You'd want to make sure your insurance was paid for just in case something happens.

I had my old XD ESP sitting in the streetfront drive for ages and found it unlocked one day with the glovebox open and generally rifled through...but otherwise undisturbed. Lets hope thats all it was

someone tried to steal my car the other day too......bastards broke the keyhole cover on the drivers door.

If you haven't already. Take out insurance!

With AAMI you can ring and get coverage, and get them to send the invoice out, which gives you 2 weeks to pay. Also, consumer rights mean in the first 2/4 weeks you can pull out. Good if your short on dough to get the initial coverage, then work out how to keep it from there.

Help lessen the panic anyway.

PS Do what was suggested above. Re: remove distributor rotor button, rag in the carby and ignition coil lead.

Turn the stereo flat out, take the horn relay wire and connect it to the brake light switch behind the pedal (in addition to the above

turn ignition / start radio flat out, not a good thing to try and sort if stealing a car / foot on brake pedal horn sounds, now this causes real problems as you can imagine and is very easy to quick wire

Horn to the interior light relay - door open and BAM!

Put a cheap microswitch somewhere to disable it (in the grill or windshield shroud) so u dont wake the whole neighbourhood when you open your car

But some of the ideas are a pure genius, I'm going to try some of these out. Turning the volume all the way up is one hell of an idea and such a simple one too!

Definately remove dizzy rotor button, tension lead or install a kill switch. It will stop the randomns from stealing it. But unfortunately if someeone is really set on knicking it your stuffed... if you afford some get some fire n theft insurance.

And No 1 get a sensor/security light for your yard ($25 at bunnings) , scare a thief off more than anything and should wake you up.

One other suggestion (may depend on your living arrangements)
If you have a tow bar, get a big chain and padlock, Dynabolt the chain to the concrete and then pein the dynabolt over with a ball pein hammer so the nut will not come off, padlock the towbar to that. (not the tongue that can just be unbolted)

On my early cars I had an auto-lecky earth the coil to a cut off switch.

Many laughed but I had an HX kingy (ok, shoot me) with a wild 350 back in 1991 parked in the old man's driveway (much to his disgust being a Ford man). They pushed it out down the road, changed the battery but there is stood.. still mine the next morning.

As others have said try the rotor button trick and killswitch etc. But lets face it if someone wants it bad enough they will take it. Mate had his car stolen and it didnt even have a battery in it. The bastards put one in it. Have also heard of cars being rolled out of driveways, pushed down the road and towed away. Crazy stuff.

But hopefully it was just some dead beat after a quick dollar who got into your car. The ideas people have put on here are classic.. Try them

Coil kill switch is the way to go. Even set up 2 and only turn one 'off' that way if they go looking for it having two under the dash could confuse them long enough to alert someone.

Not a real nice one, but razor blades underneath the door handles is enough to alert the owner of the car, not to mention the woodbe thiefs surprise.

Yes it is illegal if you happen to have them used and left in place, but effective none the less.

Just got to remember they're there in the morning.

Cheap effective short term alternative, which i know not everyone will agree with
