Beats me how a seatbelt reminder equates to 1 out of 5 stars, but:

The only way I can see that article being truthful is Holden adding the seatbelt reminder to every other model except the Omega as it was the only Commo to have the 5 star rating. I know the front end (around the steering column) had to be revised by Holden as it wasn't good enough to pass when it was originally released. So the revised front end would naturally be on all the models but all they needed to do was add the seatbelt reminder to the rest of the models. Why didn't they do this in the first place?? No idea, but two come to mind. 1. The ran out of money for the budget and couldn't add it to the rest of the range. 2. Doing this makes it sound like entire VE range always had a 5 star rating but all they needed was the seatbelt reminder......which is what they have been trying to push for a while.

90% of VE drivers go back to the dealer to have that annoying chime turned off.

Why would you get rid of it?
It either a) chimes for a few seconds before you put your seatbelt on or b) chimes for like 30 seconds and stops. It's a safety feature. And I guess the 1 star could be justified by saying seatbelts save lifes. Which they do.

The original VE didn't get enough to score 5 stars anyway. It had a score of about 27 out of the 38 points.
The front door came ajar during the crash because the front end structure wasn't up to scratch. THAT is the reason the VE didn't score well enough. Once the VE frontal structure was beefed up, it would've scored well enough to progress to the side impact test. But without the chimes, the best you could get was 4 stars anyway, so why submit at their own cost a car with no further benefit. The seatbelt was just a further break in the deal. As to why the seatbelt chime wasn't fixed sooner, GMHolden explained it earlier this year. It was to do with the various Body Control Module variations and the resources weren't available to fix it / make the change. But, enough of this Commondore crud. Give me a 5 star FG Ford Falcon. A car good enough to get the rating without obtrusive door pillars and without needing 6 airbags. It passed with 4 bags. Adding the extra 2 gives even better protection and puts GMH's effort into the shade.

The best safety enhancement any car can have is the driver...
Whilst ANCAP might be a system for rating safety, its a marketing tool in the hands of the manufacturer.... It helps to sell cars..... If the driver forgets to use the seat belt the safety system has less capability in the event of a collision, same if systems are turned off etc.... so if the car includes a reminder or a chime for a seat belt then arguably from a rating system its better.... Its interesting from the marketing perspective because Ford claims 5 star rating etc GM then assesses the potential impact on sales and adjusts accordingly and on it goes... The reason..?? because GM and Ford are locked in head to toe competition... |

“In a broad sense it’s now as safe as the Falcon because it’s a five-star NCAP vehicle,” Mr Case said. “Technically, there’s still a slight difference in their score, and numerically the Falcon has a slightly higher score than the Commodore. But it’s hard to draw a conclusion that that means that one is really safer than the other.”
FFS.......if it was the other way around you'd bet your left testicle that they'd say the Holden would be safer....naturally. Obviously then my conclusion is that the ANCAP points sytem means absolutely zip. |

If you have enough weight on a seat (from putting an object on it) it will chime every few seconds. Something like a ladies handbag will do it.

I heard Volvo were pushing to have the ratings system adjusted, by adding more stars because apparently what they have or are developing still gets slotted into the 5 star rating instead of a higher, distinctive rating which they deserve.

Also note that the door design although unique in the Ford world, did borrow some Volvo IP which is why they are so good.
