An article on a device called a SoundRacer just popped up on Drive that got my attention.
Homesite:http://www.soundracer.se/ The Aussie website that sells them is here: http://www.latestbuy.com.au/sound-ra...ansmitter.html A small device that plugs into your 12V power socket, senses your cars rpm, and plays either a V8 or V12 sound track via FM to your sound system. Sounds horribly artificial and tacky to me, but I think it's a step in the right direction. If had more control over how it sounded i think it would be a winner. Maybe I'd now consider a Turbo 6 if I could still get it to sound like a V8 when I wanted it to.... Didn't someone also patent the name 'Revtone' somewhere recently? Lukeyson

If you want your car to sound like a V8 or a V12 then buy a bloody V8 or V12...

They had this on Fifth Gear a long time ago.Was funny watching her drive this little buzz box that sounded like a V8 as she changed gears up and down.

We had a chat about this at work today.
Electric cars will be effectively silent, and we can expect that there may be a few more pedestrian injuries because people can't hear electric cars coming. Also, I see a lot of people walking to work with portable MP3 players or radios. If this SoundRicer thing is sending it's sound to your car car via FM, it might be possible that those walking down the road listening to the radio on their portable player might then be able to hear an SoundRicer equipped EV approaching due to it's FM transmissions.... The way of the future or scary nightmare? Lukeyson

Actually, that's the very reason I invested in a nice 2.5 inch stainless steel system to strap to my windsor, that emits a rather nice sound - pedestrian protection I call it. |

The German tuners ARE using something like this on their hybrid cars for these exact reasons.
You’ve got to hear something to give warning to pedestrians so why not a nice synthetic V8 (thinks of recent episode of Weeds where the character U-turn was using Prius’ for drive by shootings because it made it real easy to sneak up on his targets….)
