Default Mk2 Escort Starter Not Throwing In.

Having problems with my starter motor. When you push the button to start, most of the time it just whirrs and wont throw in. I keep pushing it and eventually it grabs and cranks. When it does grab the engine turns over fine.

Bradz
there are 2 sizes of starters that suit the pinto, escort & cortina, the escort ones are from experience in the rally car very fragile and tempermental.
The most simple & cheapest option is to stick a cortina one in
they are larger in size and will require either lifting / tilting the motor and or removing the passenger side engine mount to get it it

(when you stick them side by side it is easy to pick as there is a noticable size difference)

Brad, I've had the same problem but was able to take the starter off and clean the bendix shaft. It gets a bit dirty and won't let the cog slide forward. Puzzle is right when he says the left engine mount needs to come off to get the **blessed thing ** out. I was lucky enough to have a few spares and there are two types, one a bit smaller but no probs fitting.
Cheers and good luck.
