1970 Ford Capri

Hi all, I have a general question about my 70 model v6 capri regarding the external drivers side mirror. If anyone is familiar with this model I would appreciate if they post the information for the original set of capri mirrors for that year. As I familiarise myself with this website I will provides pics of my proud beast! Look forward to a reply, thanks.

Yellow_Festiva, right on the money. I see plenty of capri's with aftermarket accessories, in this case mirrors, hanging off them that its hard to tell the originals apart from the aftermarket.

this is my 71 capri gt its an early build so it has the same mirrors as a 70 model. there was a change over mid 71 to xy mirrors there is pictures on the fpv website.

mr xr8. Thanks heaps for your knowledge, your capri is a gem. Do you know where I can find these mirrors and general capri parts?
Ps I notice it looks like you have the original seat belts and buckles from the last picture you supplied. Did they come with the car, or is that something you had put in? I am currently trying to hunt down an original pair myself! Thanks

That last photo shows a good panel & paint mans work (2pak ?)

Just noticed your yellow GT badge. I thought they were red. Sold my GTV6 in the late eighties. Had a big cam, gasket & dport matched heads & inlet manifold with a 600Holley with maxxed out jets. ZF diff. Ran high 14s.

well i think side mirrors are a persont sort of a thing...they look like the right mirrors but alot have the chrome round style
alot have the xc xb xa mirrors or like my slef i have to tear drop side mirrors and they look the goods as well ..so its all up to you

The mirrors on the black car above are corect for the early 69-71 GT's (4cyl and v6). These are rare as hens teeth due to the plastic base snapping at the leading screw hole. The all chrome ones that look similar are aftermarket 'racing style' and are a close period-match (see eBay et al).
The non-GTs had nondescript all chrome ones - probably Falcon-based generics.
I've seen the XW/Y teardrop mirrors and more commonly the Falcon style with adapter plates underneath (as per Escort and Cortina fitment (diff spacers to Capri) ...typical Ford Oz). The Falcon ones are easily found, XW/Y teardrops can be found repro for a price (of course).

Comes down to how original you want to be....and how much you want to see.
Just got my 1970 back on the road with the original GT style mirror....And you see stuff all behind you. The Falcon ones would be a better best for visibility.

Measurements are:
Capri 1970 GT style = 85 face diameter (circular)
Falcon XA/XB etc = 125W x 75H
XW/Y teardrops = (unknown ...somebody else to respond?)
.........and fitting holes are different spacing apart. Decide once, drill once.

Not looking to rain on your parade, but that GT badge is in the wrong position (too high - should be down sitting on the raised section more).

Very nice car though, looks like it was a good clean example when you started.

Not to rain on your parade, Jamie, but to get techinical........Since the car doesn't have side stripes it would be considered a "delete" option. Therefore the badge should be in the middle of the rear quarter panel.

Currently raining here but no parade.

If the car was a delete option, you are correct. I used to own a delete, and it's a shame you don't see more of them around.

To get super technical, there was no black in the paint choice either, but I'm guessing the owner decided they liked this colour (I actually quite like it on this car).

The delete-option GT badges are indeed in the rear quarter, in a similar position to the XL badges. But my reference vehicle got carted off to Vic. with his many other friends a coupla years ago (and I mean many... - those in the know will know of whom I speak).
The non-delete badges should only be on the upper face of the flute/hockey stick /swage line (as per Cosworthfreak/Jamie). And now the ultra-purists can go and get their tape measures out and give some exact postions... to the 0.001mm pls. Me, can't be bothered, it's raining and thundering...again.

Jamie - bought a Capri yet? Was that your Cosworth Mk4 Escort at the Muster?

Hi Allan,

I'd have to get the verniers out but I'd just put the badge back where the factory holes are anyway.

I'm currently rebuilding my Capri 1600, but have had a few Capris on and off. I didn't have a car at the muster, although I'm looking forward to any photos.

Sounds like you had a full backyard at one stage, wish I could have helped you lighten the load.

Rain has just stopped here.

To get back on track I thought I'd post another picture of the 1970 Capri 'sports' mirror. The second picture is the closest aftermarket mirror I've been able to track down, and even these are difficult to find.

I had a set of these mirrors on a 1970 GTV6 years ago. I sold the car sans those mirrors and still have them (no not for sale).

A mate of mine wanted them for his MK2 1600E Cortina as he told me they had them too.

So they might be easier to find in the UK if Cortinas had them too over there.

....things are only sold when there is not enough space to keep them, or selling will bring funds to buy something else.
Unfortunately, I not have any good condition/unbroken side mirrors.
Rocking horse droppings are more easily found.

I know what you mean about collecting parts, although I'm coming to the stage of needing a clean out.

I have a couple of the 1970 sports mirror bodies which are missing their mirror sections, and one has a slight crack (which could be repaired). If you have any of the missing parts, maybe a reasonable set of mirrors could be assembled?

Yes and surplus stuff will be sold off once the car is completed which is unfortunately a task that constantly seems to get put behind other tasks.

I'm in the process of a big cleanout right now. Then I'll get the old Honda XL500's going and sell them off for one smaller and newer bike as the 500 has always been too big for me.

The Capri stuff has to stay until I decide which parts I'll actually use.

I can't find a steel Facelift bonnet for reasonable $$ so I might cut up a 4 cylinder bonnet and narrow the dip in the centre to make a phantom 4 cylinder facelift bonnet. I think that as soon as I've sorted the bonnet dilemma the rest of the car will get underway a lot quicker.

I wish I had the money and the understanding wife to enable me to collect as prolifically as our friend that moved to Victoria has.

That wouldn't be an easy task, did you find any steel ones available? I thought you were initially going to go for a fibreglass one?

I assume the friend that moved to Victoria is Russ, I've only spoken to him once or twice but he seems like a good guy. Going by the stuff in your shed, you're not going too bad. I wish I had half the stuff in there that you do.
