Not trying to re-open the closed thread, this is a different topic to set the record straight! The police work for and get paid by the NSW Police Dept. They send your infringement notice to the RTA to collect the fine and deal with your points/license. I believe the law changed very recently, so that if a judge finds you not guilty the RTA is directed to re-instate the points to your license - they have no choice in the matter

the RTA can keep the points only if it is a section 10 dismissal ( offence proven but no conviction recorded) if you are found not guilty you keep your points. also if you elect for a court hearing they don't take the points till there is a result either way. the government is looking at the section 10 problem as the magistrayes intention is clear that no penalty should apply but the RTA are currently a law unto themselves ( there is a big shake up coming at the RTA soon with a lot of the big wigs on the dole cue

Actually Police more the fact the HWP are payed by the NSW police but they do do RTA funded operations payed soley by the RTA.
Police and RTA can ask for your license to be suspended in certain circumstances without convictions or offences being recorded. You can be deemed not suitable to hold a license but they must give good reason to do so. This happens in most cases when the person becomes too old to drive and is basically a hazard on the road(not meaning to upset the oldies). Not all elderly people can not drive but some do lose their ability to do so over time. Also people that have epilepsy & diabetes and have had issues behind the wheel may also fall into the same category. Hope that helps clear up some of these points.
