Where did the fuel come from?
Could be the fuel filter/pump? Bang the tank while the car's running, see if the noise from the pump changes... Vacuum leak? How clean's the front of the motor, the crank angle sensor could be fouled? Does it rev cleanly? Fuel smoke? Lifters will make a ticking/rattling sound if stuffed.

Sounds like bad fuel or weak spark......
Low fuel pressure is normally worse under acceleration. Does it have reasonable power? Could be a blocked cat but that's not usually a sudden thing.

Sounds like a good starting point, yeah. Don't think from what you're saying that it'll be anything very major

Disconnect the injector electrical connector for each cylinder one at a time.
If it makes no difference to how it runs then that cylinder is where your problem is. It won't tell you WHAT is wrong but it has to be either fuel or spark. |

Cracked spark plug ? Does it do it at idle ? If so remove 1 lead at a time until you find which cylinder .
Could be Coil pack though if its constant . Ticking when hot , IS it low on Oil ? maybe the oil is in need of a chnge

Can you try to describe what "sounding like its running on 5 cylinders" sounds like? I noticed today that my AUIII I6 engine note seems to be more rumbly and throaty, actually sounds pretty cool, but I know it's not normal. :(
I've only ever had random split second misfires due to bad leads, never a cylinder that is totally dead, so I'm not sure what it sounds like... guess I'll be trying the sparks and/or injector plugs tomorrow to see what happens. |

Cheers for that. Hmm, mine is sort of like that, it is chugging a little, but not quite so bad. Once I'm in the car and driving I don't notice any difference, apart from the trip meter showing excessive consumption (got past 17L/100km the other day)
In the past 6 months I've replaced leads, sparks, coil pack, O2 sensor... so I'm thinking by now it's probably something mechanical. :( Or maybe an injector... When pulling the injector connectors do you stop the engine between each one, or can you do it on the fly? |

Ok, next silly question. How are you supposed to disconnect the individual injectors? It's impossible to pull them all at the injector itself for most of them (fuel rail, air tubing etc in the way) so is there a way to disconnect them individually at the other end of the cable, or do they all feed into a single connector?
Found another coolant leak. *sigh* |
