Anyone own or drive taxis?

Me and the old man are thinking about getting a taxi licence,plate etc........I am wondering if it is a good idea to get into the taxi business as a way of a getting a good income or would you say it would be a "unfruitfull" business to get into?
also do taxi plates vary in price?

I did it for a while it really sucked i dont know that you could make much out of it in newcastle people throw up in the cab have sex in the back rob you leave there food stuff in the cab i think on average it works out to be about an $6.00 per hour job

yeah i hear what you're saying,but we will be buying the car,licence and plate in one hit so all the moneys will be coming to us,maybe except a small bit for the paging system.

as for the spewing etc thats what the vinyl is for and i will only except lesbian sex in the back seat.As for the robberies it is only newcastle and i am a big bloke so they will def think twice about it.

I looked into leasing a licence, and it could be viable with 2 good drivers. I drove in Brisbane for 5 yrs as a second job, and always took home more than 12 bucks an hour, often more. If you think about the shift you're driving, you can put yourself in a better position to maximise your income (sounds like a load of crud, but it works).

My wife decided to get her taxi licence, and she still drives in Brisbane, and gets more than 10 bucks an hour for a day shift.

I guess if you worked on a fifty/fifty split, pay yourself or whoever's driving half, and put aside the other half for expenses/servicing/repairs, you would do quite well.

And the cost of buying the licence will vary, depending on what area it is.

Edit: Twice in 5 years I had people throw up. You watch/listen to what they are doing to prepare for it.
Had one runner, and one bloke who wanted to 'roll' me. He ended up giving me a tip because he ended up thinking I was a good bloke!

Get a ute and do courier work ... much more money to be had delivering boxes and pallets ... plus they don't spew up on your vehicle ... and they don't rob you either ... and you don't have to put up with whinging idiots tell you where to go.

what do you need apart from falcon uterus? do you need a special licence etc.......

Some people do all right.. you defently have to own the plate to do real good... But depends on thre cost of the plate and weather any are avalible, plates down in geelong are now at around 220,000.. thata alot of cash to earn

i was chatting to a taxi bloke in melb some time ago about the cost of licence 200k+, he also said you could run 5 cabs off that licence is that true ????

No special licence is needed for doing courier work ... unless you are wanting to use company trucks ... then the necesarry truck licence is needed.

But for ute/van work ... standard car licence is all you need.

Pretty easy work ... Loading zones are your friend.
