Friends of mine have just bought a 2012 Ecoboost Mondeo. Does anyone know what power and torque these motors make on 98RON? Is there a difference? I imagine with such a boosted high compression engine that with 98 the engine management can unleash some nice gains. Does anyone know?

I would expect power to increase slightly, but torque would not budge much - looking at the official chart it is quite clear tthat the torque curve is heavily controlled by the engine managment system...
My bum-o-meter says this is the case - but then again I've only run up 4,500klm in my 2011 Ecoboost Mondeo so far so it's still a little tight. |

Certainly has that steam train push just as the Turbo Diesels do, but being petrol its over a more user friendly rev range and you don't have to live with the steam train sound track. When punting it along the dual clutch six speed auto/manual really keeps it on the boil too.

In some ways its a shame Ford have to let the Volvo 5cylinder motor go. They were a real sleeper and easily boost up to over 300hp. Never meet new emissions regs though..

The mondeo uses a variable vane turbo which allows it to hold max torque over a range of RPM like a turbo Diesel does. It's why it has that flat spot... And the 'limitations' on the motor will be to do with the Emissions. Mondeo is one of the most under rated cars we carry and are an absolute pleasure to drive.

Ecoboost Falcon does 179kw@5500rpm (17 more than XR5T Mondeo), and 353Nm@2000rpm (?53 more than XR5T with +400rpm), ....... IIRC
And the XR5T does drive like a steam train without the steam train noise (hoo-hooooo and chuffa-chuffa sounds are owner-supplied options). Qstn: What sort of fuel economy are people getting from the Mondeo Ecoboost in real world driving? (My XR5T is 8.8 after 32K kms) |

Sedate driving can match Ford's combined 8l/100, more spirited driving pushes it to 9.2l/100 - but at 4.5ks shes still a little tight so I suspect those numbers may improve.

Early fuel consumption numbers hovered in the low 11's for our Titanium, but has now settled to low 9's. This is for round town driving. I find the "steam train" effect is great for overtaking because it just go's and go's, up-shifts see the engine not falling out of it boost zone. However, the engine lacks some of the character of a N/A engine with no building of revs and then a peak of power before an upchange.

I just love these Ecoboost engines. To think they are a 10:1 comp engine with around 16psi boost running on normal pump fuel and making the power and torque of an NA engine 60-80% bigger, but with absolutely billiard table flat torque curves is revolutionary. I just wish they put the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost in the Territory or Falcon. Those things change the tilt of the Earth.

So what does the owners manual say for EcoBoost Mondeo regards fuel? ULP or PULP?

To quote the manual :
"The engine in your Mondeo has been optimised for operation on premium unleaded fuel (95 RON or higher). It is also safe to operate the engine on standard unleaded fuel (91 RON minimum), however if you choose to do so, you may notice some minor loss of performance, economy amd increased engine noise" It also states that E10 Unleaded can also be used, but with a increase in fuel consumption. From the above statement, I could take it power and economy figures have been achieved on premium 95 RON. Would 98 RON make a diff? Maybe? I tend to put 98 RON in ours, but will also use 95 RON if I have to.

My dad has always put 95 in his Mondeo. Real world average fuel economy was 6.8 L/100km when I was driving it earlier in the year (about 70:30 highway:city).
My dad reports an average of 8.5 L/100km on his daily commute to work/dropping off the other kids at school. On that run, the speed limit never exceeds 80 km/h. The car has done 12300 km.

I like the ...."you may notice some minor loss of performance, economy amd increased engine noise" bit. Same as our MA 2.3L, if you dont run 95RON it uses about 1L/100km more and pings under load. Cheers |

The XR5 Turbo can run on 95RON but does feel a bit sluggish and I think it uses more fuel (or might just be my heavy boot to get it going more...).
as for 91ROn, the manual says...DON'T....(may danage your engines, or similar words...). And I'd have to agree that flat turbo torque 'curve' is just marvelllous |

I run Shell V Power 98ron in my EcoBoost.
As we only do short trips, the ave fuel at the moment is 9.6L/100km. Went for a trip out to Stanthorpe and got 6.9L/100km there and back. So not too bad...

I only ever use 98 in my non-ecoboost, my local Shell only has 91 or 98, and I'd prefer to run it on 95 or above as that's what the manual recommends.
