Premo brakes have there own dedicated upright...........Did uprights come with the calipers??
If not you need brackets fabricated.

Oh..................For a true genuine bolt on AU premo front brake kit you need uprights to suit.

Yeah ok, have seen plenty premo calipers for sale but unless they come with suitable uprights or some sort of fabricated bracket they wont bolt to your std upright.
Years ago I bought a premo kit from the wreckers and uprights were included............moved em on a few months ago and uprights went with them.

Being an AU3 the calipers should bolt straight onto the upright. Early AU2s have the caliper mounted on the trailing side of upright and DO NEED THE BRACKET. Late AU2s and AU3s have the caliper mounted on the leading side of the upright and do not need the bracket. Early AU2s have a different upright to Late AU2s and AU3s. I have recently acquired Tickford Premium calipers on my Late AU2 XR. |

Ford attaches the mounting bracket to the calipers when they are new for replacement and do NOT service them as a replacement part. Hopefully whomever you are buying the calipers off will have enough sense to leave the brackets that mount the caliper to the stub axle on the calipers.

G'day Daz This what I'm going on. My sincere apologies for getting it back to front !!! It's really difficult to say if you'll need the brackets or not, but to explain what happened in my situation. I hope it helps in some way...? As far as I know, AU1 and AU2 uprights are different and there are two different uprights for AU3. Whether you need adapter brackets to fit the Premium brake calipers depends on what uprights you car has. My AU2 TE50 never had Premium brakes (it was an option on T2 TE50, only standard on TS50 and TL50 in the AU2 T-series range). My car had standard AU2 brake setup. I purchased the calipers off ebay (brand new) before researching and read nothing but "you need adapter brackets." I tried everywhere to find the brackets and the only lead I had was to have some made, using a borrowed bracket as a pattern. The calipers and discs sat in the box under the bed for months. One weekend I had the front wheel off (to replace a front wheel bearing). Once the new bearing and hub was on, I decided to "test fit" a 330mm disc to see how it looks and see how far off the caliper fitment was. Once the disc was on, I couldn't see how the Premium caliper wouldn't fit, so tried it. Everything lined up, no brackets, no stuffing around. They are however fitted on the leading edge of the disc (as opposed to the factory fit being on the trailing edge of the disc). I can't give you a definite idea of whether you need brackets or not - you may... HOWEVER the only way I knew I didn't need the brackets was to just bolt it all up and see. Glad I didn't just go on what I read otherwise I'd have spent a good few hundred dollars on brackets I didn't need. Don't want to give you false hope but my AU is a late AU2 also (May 2001). Many thanks to 'macman' for his support. Cheers

there are many brake upgrade threads for AU`s, i had a bit of a squiz but eyes are startin to fail me ,you`ll probably find the info here if your eyes can hold out ;).
hoppers stoppers a while ago had brackets for their own brake upgrade kit for Au`s, i had quick look a few mins ago there`s no listing of it on their site that i can see, but they still might be able to help you, worth a phone call perhaps. |

Why won't you have brakes to put back on?

I stand by my post, just going on my personal experience. Thanks AlfaRomeoGTV6 for quoting it and thanks BZINGA for linking the older thread in here.
One thing is for certain and that is there's more to it than "yes you need brackets" or "no you don't need brackets." It seems there are at LEAST three different uprights. The T1 uprights (no brackets, caliper on trailing edge), whatever is on my car (no brackets, previously standard brakes, calipers on leading edge) and whatever uprights are fitted to AU3/T3's with the caliper on the trailing edge but brackets required. Do what I did... Take the wheel off, unbolt the caliper and hang it from some wire (so you don't need to disconnect the brake line as this will just be a look-see/test-fit), remove the original disc, put new larger disc in place and see if the Tickford caliper will line up. If it all lines up then release the kraken. Good luck. |

I put premos on my late AUII from a T3. They came with brackets and I needed to use them.
I'm a little rusty but IIRC AUI and early AUII had specific uprights for cars equipped with the Premo brake package. That's also why they had the calipers mounted on the trailing side of the rotor as opposed to the lead side on the late AUII and AUIII. So I dare say you'll need the brackets and unfortunately they are impossible to get a hold of unless you get really lucky. Fabricating them, as someone else got quoted for here once, is also rather spendy.

We thought this would be a straight swap - we were doing this on the workshop floor - but it aint.... The AUIII standards were mounted on the leading side and the AUII Premiums were mounted on the trailing side and there is no way that they are interchangeable. So what did we do? Luckily Shane is a mechanic and we were able to swap over the front uprights and bolt everything up ok, so now my AUIII has Premium brakes on the trailing side. (Why did Shane put the standard brakes on? - Well he is saving up for some 6 pot Brembos and needed the coin from selling off the Premiums to me.) I'm not sure what these brackets are (has someone a picture?) and I don't know if you could fit Premium brakes on the leading side of an AUIII, or did late AUII and AUIII have different Tickford uprights that allowed the Premiums to be fitted on the leading side? If that's the case then maybe Shane's XR6 VCT was an early AUII with the early trailing edge Tickford upright? This is all very confusing...

If Ford made it simple then everyone would want one as for the premo brake set up there appears to be 3 set ups not all model dependant more luck of the draw, both leading and trailing type some using the different up right others needing the bracket to adapt them, Best option if buying second hand to convert from standard is to make sure ALL the fitting hardware is included because the callipers on there own only make expensive door stops

So I've had a look at a few other Tickford Premium threads and this is the one, started by Whoosha, that actually makes the most sense.
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...premium+brakes So Tickford developed the brackets to enable the Premium Calipers to be mounted on the leading side of T3s, which is how the Brembos were mounted and also to eliminate the need to produce two different uprights. So the bracket enabled AUII and III XRs with Premium brakes to be mounted on the leading side, that is, use the standard AUII/III upright, but according to Tick4ord-Tas they used the old uprights and were mounted on the trailing side? Like Shane's AUII XR6 VCT, from which I swapped his Tickford Premiums. So does this mean that only T3s with the standard Premiums use the bracket to mount the brakes on the leading side? If that is the case then it is no wonder that the Tickford developed brackets are as rare as rocking horse droppings... So all these guys that have bought PBR C4 Caliper kits or some second hand Premium calipers need to source the rare or expensive brackets or make sure they get the trailing side upright as part of the sale or find them separately - not easy. Looks like I was very lucky that I was able to swap the brakes including the uprights from an AUII that had been optioned from the factory with Tickford Premium brakes. Otherwise I would join the other guys on the forum who have Tickford Premium calipers that are currently being used as doorstops...
