gulf western oil?

never used it personally. I'm sure, like most oils it will do an okay job and as long as you change it regularly you wont have too many issues.

Personally Penrite is my choice, best quality oil, Australian brand and in tests it has been proven to be a quality lubricant.

there is a report some where in the tech site here I think.

Used some in my old 5L ef, I think I still have a couple of litres in the laundry cupboard. Was a good quality cheap oil but not a high end competitor. Not sure if I use it in my 3V (if it was the correct viscosity) but I would probably give it a go.

I used to buy it by the 44 - diesel engine oil and hydraulic fluid for a fleet of commercial boats.

It us good stuff in that application - heavy equipment and low speed motors, but Ive had no experience with it in my own cars.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread from the dead but I am interested in peoples perceptions of Gulf Western Oil.

The company is Australian owned (Ampol days I think) and I seem to be seeing more and more of their products at Auto Stores lately. The local Repco guy here told me it is a quality oil at a working man's price. FWIW - He recommended it over Castrol.

Used it in my EL XR6, wasn't too sure on it

From memory it didn't get dark but also fraction noisy

Repco have a sale on it, i would now prob use as a flushing oil then use my good stuff

That'll be because he makes more out of it than the other brands - so do we (autobarn).

They're big in mining and industrial applications where they sell high volumes at low costs. Havent - and wouldn't - use it in my car. Mostly just a perception thing I think but for me I walk straight past it and go to either Penrite or Liqui Moly depending on what it's for.

I wouldn't say 'dont ever use it' - but it is a cheap oil at a cheap price.

At the end of the day i'd be using a proven oil on my car! I mean if I had a XR6 turbo, GT ect I would not be putting cheap stuff in it

You would be amazed at how many people do though. So many times people will grab the GW 20w50 off the shelf and buy it for their Merc or Beemer. No matter how much you try and explain to them its not the right grade of oil let alone the brand.

I've used it for a few years now in the magna, can't fault it. Costs 16 bucks for a four liter bottle at woolies.

Good stuff have no problem with it have been using it in the territory for some time

I use Penrith HPR 30 in the 38 flathead due to its zinc content but in the modern cara and the diesel ute I've been using gulf western and think its pretty good

Tried it in my clubby for one oil change as that's what my tuner used. I changed it out pretty quickly, made the old LS1 have more than normal noises, but i also had the same problem with castrol edge as well. I use Nulon and it's as quite as a mouse. Also used nulon on my old BA XR8

the cheaper stuff i wouldn't use. I had mate in the oil game tell me about a co worker would sell the acid to use to recycle the old oil.

The higher end stuff i would try but i use durablend atm before i try Hpr 10 again

Lets face it, if its for an older car, like something from the 80s/90s like standard E series Falcons it would probably do the job fine.

there are different grades and different prices, i get the 20l diesel type and its good oil just don't get the $15 for 5L stuff from supercheap unless its for something older and you can change it more often.
i have used the $15 stuff in my VH v8 commodore but i change it every 1000km or so.

If you think that changing oil at every 1000k's is a good idea then do some research son. (unless you only drive it 1000k every 6 months you are wasting your money)

Currently using Gulf Western in my BA. Used K-Mart oil in my XF Falcon. Got rid of the car at 500,000km. Only had a head overhaul in that time and was running well. As long as the grade is right, it is OK.

Used it in the B series taxis, no problems, but as said get the right grade.
The auto oil is fine too...for 4 speeds only but.

i don't drive it really it just sits there and i only do about 1000km a year
