Looking at buying a late 90s pulsar and i know bugger all about them except they are underpowered anything i need to look out for,how many km are the motors good for,head gaskets,issues etc.
I joined up a pulsar site but they wont let me post yet thanks |

Late 90's means your looking at a 1.6 N15. Only the SSS had a 2.0 option. The 1.8 became a option in 2001. They are a good reliable car. As good as the Corolla's, 323's, Lancer's of the time. They run a timing chain unlike all of there competitors which should be good for the life of the car. They can seem a bit underpowered but get down the road ok and are well put together. Good car.

Not bad cars dont fix many of them at work just the normal things like alternators and starters.

Those cars sound awesome damo,bit out of my price range though,id love an sr20 powered pulsar would be heaps of fun,im only looking to spend around 2-2.5g.This will be the fourth car in the garage, to be used for shopping and sitting at the wifes work getting covered in overspray from the company behind them

My wife had an N14 when we first met about 10 years ago. Thing was bullet proof. Had over 200000k's on it when we got rid of it.
The roof lining went. The only other things I replaced was the drive shafts and CV joints, water pump and thermostat. Access to the water pump was tight - as with a lot of the fwd asian cars, but otherwise it was a solid little unit. |

Only issues I have seen with them over the years have all been around aftermarket oil filters. For some reason the nissan dealer i worked at:would have n14's and n15's come in making funny engine noises and almost every time they would do an oil and filter change and off they went no funny noises and I still don't know why

Had an n15 1.6l for my first car. Was a brilliant little thing only issue i ever had was the starter motor went but it wasnt difficult to replace. Wish i still had it now. Great on fuel around town to used to get 500km on about 40l.

Work colleague had an N14 Ti hatch ... with the SR20 .... went really well and quiet for a vehicle with over 400,000km on it with factory engine/manual.
Only had one clutch change and general maintenance.

My wife owned a 98 model n15 1.6 manual for 10 years, in 170 000 km it only needed a set of front brake pads and a pair of outer cv boots. Reliable car with great fuel economy. Pretty good to drive too for what they are.

If its had clean oil. They are bulletproof. Check timing belt has been changed. I think they bend valves when they go. Other than that they are awesome.
I have had a few and my wife drives a 01 pulsar. Excellent & efficient cars! |

My brother has an n15 1.6 which I used as a daily last year and it was great in every aspect
Cheap on fuel and at almost 200000kms still no issues He might be interested in selling it are you in nsw?

My wife had a 94 Pulsar when we met, Great car, my only criticism is if it has been kept outside (not garaged) The plastics inside become very brittle

I've owned 5 pulsars (2 being SSS's with the SR20DE engines) and they are great cars. I had an 01 N15 (only the 1.6L) that I modded and thrashed for about 3 years, never skipped a beat.

Have owned a few over the years, daughter still drives one. Always a good buy, cheaper than equivalent Corolla or Focus.
Generally very economical if driven accordingly, but have decent power if you push it to the redline. Personally, I preferred the versions withOUT power steer, very nice and direct, but it was common on the models you’re looking at. Nothing much to say against them, they will have the same issues as most cars that age. CV joints go, cooling system sludges up if not driven regularly or well maintained, ignition can be a problem if it hasn’t been overhauled in 20 years, as can be injectors. My dear old mum had one from new, and it LITERALLY was driven to church on Sunday by an old lady, it actually suffered from the lack of use. Baser models suffered from being very bland, but sounds perfect for what you want. From a “drivers” perspective they had substantial torque-steer if pushing hard out of a corner, and would easily spin one of the front wheels. Depending on which year/model you get, ABS and Air Bags may have been coming available. As for kilometres, it really depends on how they have been driven. They are good engines, but 200k is definitely on the outer limits, but again for what you want if the engine is still running who cares if it’s dropped a kw or two. Be wary of “SSS” or “Q” models that maybe been owned by rice-warriors, these engines had a decent amount of power at the top end, but driving them that hard doesn’t do much for longevity. Also be aware that these were a popular car for grey imports in the day. Like any car of that age, look hard at the transmission. Relative to the cost of the car they are expensive to fix. Please, whatever you do, check the seatbelts carefully, and replace if any sign of wear. We had a 94, and the driver’s seatbelt failed in a 30kph rear-ender.

I have a 99 N15 (1.6L) Pulsar Plus Manual...it's now sitting in my driveway. Ten years I've had her for. It's got just over 200k on the clock. The only issue I've ever had with it, was a wallaby jumping out in front of me. I didn't bother trading it in when I got the ST...but they are good little cars, and it's gotten me from Qld to Victoria on a number of occasions (about 80,000k's worth of travel)...decent little cars, can't really fault them to be honest. They just don't have the power of the ST ;)

I had an N15 S2 SSS as a runabout, I bought it off a family member, used it for a while, then on sold it to another family member - who happens to be renowned for being brutal to cars. So far it is the only thing he hasn't been able to kill, despite it now having racked up well over 300,000km.
As a matter of fact the person I bought it off regretted selling it so much that she went and bought another one exactly the same soon after. Certainly gets my recommendation. |

Agreed !! My Mother has had one of the last SSS's since new... 2.0ltr auto... it has been a completely reliable car for her ! Only ever had regular servicing it's entire life, as nothing has ever gone wrong with it ! She still loves it
