Hello all.
Today has been a mind numbing experience dealing with engineers to get my car through for rego. It's a HQ 1 tonner with late model 304. My problem is that RMS state that i can install a motor with up to 15% more capacity without an engineer. All i need is a blue slip. Problem is this: No HQ 1 tonner ever had a 308 fitted. This means 253 was the biggest, and a 15% increase leaves me at 290cubes. They simply refuse to accept the fact that 74 HJ 1 tonners had the 308 option using the same chassis as a HQ and HQ sedans had the 308 and 350 option, with the same brakes as the 1 tonner disc front etc. So despite later facelifts with the same components, or sedans with the same compont, if the HQ 1 tonner variation never had a 308, i'm up the well known creek and need an engineer to sign off on it. Speaking with engineers gave mixed results about everything. Some were ok with the dual side exit exhausts, others not so. Some were fine with period correct jellybean mags. Others wanted the pressed steel rims. Some didn't even know what a HQ was. Some wanted emissions testing depite being a stock motor with stock loom etc. Others wanted the speedo calibration checked despite already being done with my own GPS. Others wanted to delve into the brakes and research them. All of these at my cost of course for their time. My one glimmer of hope was that one engineer heard there may soon be a change to increase the capacity to 20% before needing an engineer, bringing it into line with Victoria. Anyone know about this? This is my only real hope. It feels like standing at the edge of a cliff where i either get shot by someone, or jump off. The result is that i get screwed either way, and i am well over it. Should have just used a HJ chassis and cruised on through instead of dealing with this rubbish.......

Don't know of the rule changes but is that engineer out at Camden still working? Peter Smith I think his name is? Heard good things about his work and he has been in the game for a while.

The National Code of Practice calls for all States to adopt uniform laws although time frames are rubbery at best. The NCOP does allow for a 20% increase in power or engine mass.
Cheers Russ

im just about to "attempt" to get my XC changed over from ACT to NSW rego, which includes blue slip. My car is engineered, but in the "old system".

Engineers had to adopt over to the new VCSS which is a nightmare for mods.
Where as the old system was a "yeah, she looks ok maybe some brakes mate" approach. You were probably better off running a HJ as the engineers are working strictly to the factory configuration and modifications based off it. Which as you say is where your dilema sits. Emission, braking chassis etc are all ok and should pass on their own merit. Under VCSS the vehicle has to pass engineers to get the rego and you'll have the find the right one to sign off. Try http://oldholden.com and start there. It's enthusiast site for everything pre VB. Someone on there will be able to steer you straight on how to get it through. PS: It's a great site and some really awesome build threads in there...
