New figures highlight the decline in the Falcon’s popularity, which was a major factor in Ford’s decision to end Australian production.
Ford announced last month it would stop making cars in Australia in 2016. The latest Roy Morgan Research automotive data shows there are 164,000 people in the market for a new Ford in the next four years, not including fleet, government or rental buyers. Back in 2008, there were 190,000 people in the market for a new Ford. Roy Morgan Research general manager of consumer products Geoffrey Smith says that equals a 15 per cent volume decline. "The profile of the market is changing, and that the number of people who are interested in buying a Ford, who are also interested in a Falcon is changing," he says. "So we're seeing two things happening - we're seeing amongst all people who are interested in a Ford, back in 2008 nearly half of them wanted a Falcon, now it's less than 30 per cent [who] want a Falcon." http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-06-1...ction=business

This is not just a Ford thing.
The market is now massively segmented across many manufacturers and many models. Toyota sell 18 models or soemthing! |

Interesting... Add Territory in there & you’re probably talking 40-50% of future customers you’re walking away from. Good luck to the Ford dealer network in years to come, I think you're going to need it!!

Relax boys and girls......the good old aussie dollar went down to 93 cents today.
Exports will soon reflect that as soon as current stocks are cleared. All the economists are pointing to about 0.85c/US$ in about 12 months. Wait and watch the price of imports go up...and up...and up...... |

Totally agree. I read somewhere that the top model last year (Mazda 3) sold around 40000 units whereas 10 years ago the top model sold double that.

Aussie dollar took another tumble today...
$0.92 down from $1.10 last year. and all indications are that it ain't over yet. Will be interesting by Xmas. |

yep so called mining boom is slowing down or at least plateauing, reducing demand for Australian dollars hence the drop coupled with better economic indicators out of the US.
Of course if the 'coolers' had been put on the mining boom earlier to slow its rapid growth or booming growth I doubt we would have had such an unprecedented high Australian dollar for so long doing the country so much harm. 1 in 8 Manufacturing jobs has been lost since the GFC. My readings lately suggest to me that the mining boom has been good for some select Australians but very bad for many, many more. And perhaps if a particular piece of legislation had got through in its entirety rather than being watered down, we may not be having this discussion. JP |

The drop in the Aussie dollar has very little to do with Australia, and lots to do with the American economy, we're not getting weaker, they're getting stronger.

The total of Australian built cars, barely matches the total of Commodores or Falcons sold in the 90's per year.

Fuel prices are a perfect example. A few years ago oil was $120US a barrel and we were paying a fortune because our dollar was so weak (around $0.70US). Our dollar became very very strong, oil prices dropped and yet we pay as much as ever. People need to wake up and realise that except for mining, oil and gas and those industries it supports we are already in a recession.

Back in 1996 when the falcon was the top selling car they sold 96,000 EF's .

Of course they are less people looking at Falcon's. There is soooo mcuh diversity in our market, you could break a car down to what mood you're in, and still have 5 choices at hand. It's ridiculous the amount of choice this small sales market has. And Government tries to understand why no one wants to buy Aussie made cars. Well that because the industry appears to be unregulated.
Let's not protect the products we make here.... that would be un-Australian.
