Exclamation QLD To Lower Speed Tolerances from 20/09/13

POLICE expect to catch even more motorists speeding when tolerance margins are lowered again from tomorrow.

The tolerance margin is the number of kilometres by which motorists are allowed to exceed the speed limit before being fined for speeding.

Although the exact margin is a well-kept secret it was previously thought to be as high as 10 per cent on top of the signed speed limit.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Michael Keating said the first stage of the tolerance lowering exercise in 60km/h zones had contributed to an increase in speed detections of two per cent in July and 23 per cent in August.

"This (second) adjustment of speed tolerances will apply to the whole range of speed restrictions across the state," said Asst Comm Keating.

"No jurisdiction of Australia publicises the tolerance levels but we are adjusting the tolerances according to the schedule we had decided upon."

Mr Keating said motorists should always consider the signed speed limit the maximum speed allowable.

"The important thing is for motorists to comply with the speed limits as they apply to the area in which they are driving as well as the conditions in which they are driving," he said.

"The quickest way to avoid the complication of speed is to drive to the speed limit."

He denied the latest move by police was about "revenue raising".

"It's not revenue raising, it's about saving lives. It's about encouraging people to contribute to road safety," said Mr Keating.

"We're not interested in the revenue raised by this, we're interested in protecting people road users, pedestrians, individuals who are innocent parties to road crashes."

Earlier it was reported, MORE motorists have been caught speeding as police enforce a lower tolerance margin and increase speed camera operations on Queensland roads.

Last month, the number of speed camera detections jumped 23 per cent when compared to the same period last year, with a 2 per cent rise recorded for July.

The increase comes after a 1km/h drop in the tolerance margin for speeding in 60km/h zones was announced in June and more speed camera operations were rolled out across the state.

The changes included a 28 per cent increase in mobile speed camera hours during August compared to 2012.

The Queensland Police Service has today revealed a further reduction in speeding tolerances will begin in a bid to reduce the state's road toll.

Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said police would continue to monitor compliance with speed limits and the impact on road safety.

"Our message today is drive to the posted speed limits; that is the maximum speed permitted to be travelled on the road at that time," he said.

"As at midnight last night, the Queensland road toll was 201. This is six more road deaths than at the same date in 2012 and 27 more than at the same date in 2010.

"This is not acceptable."

My comment " QPol/Govco, cann't make up their mind!! On the same day, they talk about raising the speed limit and lowering it!!!!!!!!

Next they will be asking for peoples credit card numbers so when they are 'speeding' it automatically bills you.

Revenue raising that is all. It is Disgusting that the Government and Police use road trauma and the tragedy involved as a disguise to raise money. It is laughable that the "Maud Flanders" of the world believe that safety on OUR roads is their main motivation to lower tolerances. Its utter BS.

^^^^ Totally agree. When the Newman Govt came to power the Qld economy was well in the red. So part of recovering the loss was to first raise all traffic infringements by 10% and now they're following the example set by Victoria by targeting everyday motorists who "shock - horror" endanger all other motorists by straying a couple of km's over the set limit. As traffic fines are now an entrenched part of every State Govt's budget, it's just another form of tax. (By stealth).

They seriously must all pass the policy behind closed doors then stand there dutch ruddering eachother as congrats on a job well done.

Present the public with "the facts" and let them set the bloody tolerance.

Early morning issue of The Courier Mail had an article on raising speed limits. Then, after lunch when the Govco issued the lowering tolerance, memo. Courier was slack and added to the earlier news..slack journalism!!!

Apparently a lot of fines not being paid, it wont be too long before police officers when they pull you up issue a receipt for the money govco just withdrew from your savings account linked by the ATO to their patrol car for your reckless 5km over the limit....watch this space

Mandatory GPS systems inside cars have been plausible for years... only thing holding them up are these stupid things called 'right' people apparently have.

Speeding fines will either:
A.) Be linked to your credit card for fast payment
B.) Be direct debit from your bank account 3 days from the offence (like tolls) once you call (notifiation on GPS device lets you know) or
C.) Added on to your tax through ATO payable at tax time (with interest)

This can all be done now, how long before 'mandatory road safety devices' are on every new car?

What I don't understand is, is how they can't see that with each tightening of the tolerance, the toll has increased.
Can they not extrapolate from that that their methods clearly aren't working?
Or maybe it's just that the extra income for the state is for the greater good, and the lives lost are just a small price to pay in their eyes.

Seems like a matter of, "July made heaps, August made heaps more! Let's lower it so we can make even mor than that!!".

They even had the nerve to include my uncle in the road toll last December.
He died instantly of a ruptured Aorta while he was driving and slowly drifted and came to a stop at a telegraph pole(only a small dent in car, he was in a 60 zone).

Courier Mail even claimed it to be hoon related until we all commented on the news report and they were forced to edit it saying," there may have been a medical condition at play in the cause of death".

To me it shows clear as day their agenda in regards to revenue raising.

Funny thing in NSW there is plenty of room in the prisons, magistrates dont want to lock you up as that cost money. Just a fine and a bond and off you go. I work in the juvenile system at one centre they have room for 180 inmates lucky to have 60. Why do so many get sent home only to re offend and bash someone else?.... and so the cycle continues......

Our governments are not really interested in protecting us its all about the dollars be it fines or locking people up their question is "what can we do that will cost us less and make us more $$$?"
More police on the road "no way that cost us $$$ against the one off cost of a camera and we will make good $$$ it's all about Return on Investment (ROI) but we will sell it to the masses as saving lives, however not one life has ever been saved by a speed camera.

To right.
Look at all the rubbish cars driving around Brisbane blowing smoke and even more so the smell of blowby gases of so many it makes you sick. and so much for all the baloney on pollution. If it's not money in it for them it's no deal.
I have had a gut full of them.

Its plain as day when it comes to how govco is run: like a business. The question then becomes who owns the business because it sure ain't us the public...

And where is the study that shows speed kills?

There isn't one because it doesn't!

But so much easier to fine you for speeding than attempt to prove dangerous driving.

I came across this well researched vid the other day. Quite topical!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BKdbxX1pDw

And then the issue of speedo accuracy and ADRs.

I think the reason i love speed is down to wearing a blue uniform from age 18, 22 years of driving bliss and never got done for speeding. I was always in front of everyone else....

Naturally that was before the days of speed cameras when you were informed of your naughty ways at the time and could think about it.

Revenue raising for sure. Bad driving & drug/alcohol are the killers. Oh and mobile phones/distractions.

Without significant traffic infringements being recorded, there's no justification for maintaining police numbers
