Why is it then at track days, that clevos with stock radiators do fine? I'll tell you now the temp gauge goes up much quicker in an older car, or a modern FPV when the throttle is wide open for extended periods compared to idling.

There is probably less truth to the planned obsolescence theory. Cars are made of moving parts, and by design must provide protection to the occupants/other road users all the while being economical to run. When parts do eventually wear out the cost will eventually exceed the value of the car.
We retire otherwise good cars for financial reasons.
While i have fond memories of my first car (KB Laser) and get misty eyed at the thought of still having it, the reality is i cant continue to spend $500 here $1000 there to keep it running forever.

I was never going to buy a new car, yet in 2.5 years i have purchased 2 new cars and not one regret, yeah sure i lost money on them and also on mods aswell. But i never purchased for financial gain, i purchased because i enjoy the cars i purchased.

Stupid from a financial point of view but your a long time dead.
But that's not the case for everyone, a car doesn't have to cost a lot of money to make you feel the best it's a mentality (a rather costly one at that). Old cars aren't necessarily undesirable out styled bombs, that's another mentality. There are many people thinking YOLO who share the same feeling but would prefer the XY over the brand new FPV. The difference is their XY won't depreciate. They have their cake and eat it too!

Some people like new cars and not older/classic cars so fair enough but my point/beef is that's not the primary reason for a lot of people purchasing new cars. There's a novelty involved with them and this is the mistake as far as I'm concerned. A lot of people grow up under the premise of the newer the better, or buying a new car should be something to cross off of their bucket list (a particularly annoying mentality). Nothing to do with the actual car itself. It's all about the sensation/exciting bs to them that comes with shopping from car yard to car yard and signing the contract, benchmarking/test driving, picking your colour etc. They don't feel the same sensation in a classic or even a second hand car IT HAS TO BE NEW!!! A costly frame of mind to be raised into.

These people could save a lot of time and money and just buy a rib eye roast from Coles instead of the new car.

From a structural perspective, yes crumple zones have been a fantastic way of having the car absorb most of the energy from an impact, the planned obsolescence is more in the mechanicals and electronics of a car (amongst many products). Yes moving parts will eventually wear out and need replacing at some point, but when the design life is far shorter than it should be (more often than not the design life is as long as the warranty period).

Illavitar, a term was coined for that condition you described a few years back now. It relates to the disease of keeping up with the Joneses, of portraying an image of wealth and opulence. Its called affluenza. People afflicted by it don't care that they can't afford to keep up with the Joneses, they borrow through their nose, work soul destroying jobs to keep the debt serviced and lead meaningless, superficial lives in their futile quest. I know, I was one of them. It took an almost fatal injury for me to see the error in my consumptive ways.

I'll boast that I don't require such an experience to be turned off new cars. I've never bought one due to already being aware it's probably the stupidest thing you could buy from a financial perspective, then there's the money factor I'd have to take a loan if I wanted one right now, even more stupid. Instead save for a house move out of it a year later to dodge cgt and then you can establish milking the payg working class until you accumilate 4-10 investment properties. Then buy your new car.
So where would this pool of secondhand cars come from, if NOBODY bought new cars.

I just bought my first brand new car... yes i know after its paid off its not gonna be worth no where near as much as i paid for it, but is it worth it???

I my eyes, in my situation. yes.. is it best for everyone's situation.. no.

I got my car and plan to keep it for 5-7 years (i had my previous car which was a 2nd hand 04 BA XR6 for just under 7yrs year) with my car i have got 5 years extended warranty on it, so for the first 5 yrs of driving, any issues with parts failing or what evers, its not coming out of my pocket. so its 5 yrs of worry feel motoring.. yes i am sure things will fail, like on all cars at some stage, but at least i wont be paying for it for the first 5 yrs, unless its just normal wear and tear.

I didn't buy the car as an investment or to impress anyone else, i bought the car best i love it, it the best car for my needs. I am a person who does a lot of kms just driving around for no reason at all, because it relaxes me, me and mates just go driving to catch up or to talk business. and my car does that for me.. and it makes the journey very enjoyable indeed. yes, an old car would be fun, but doing a 500km around trip in 1 day to see my mum every 2nd month or driving a couple 100kms for just a cruise, it would get annoying in a older car. where the tech in my car makes it enjoyable, relaxing and some what easier.

would i like an old car... hell yes.. but not as my primary car. I am currently looking for a 2nd car for a toy at moment.. old Big V8 of some sort.. looking at a LTD which i guy wants to sell me. i love old cars, i love the sound, the personality.

Ahhh the joys of internet extremism, where everything is black and white, I'm right and you're wrong, etc etc.

Some people swear by old cars
Some swear by the latest ones
Some would never spend money on a new car
Some don't think twice about spending on a new car

No one's truly right or truly wrong.

Ideally, we'd all have both. I yearn for the nostalgia of the old. I picture myself in a old XW Fairmont, white, jelly beans, pristine condition, AM radio, VENETIANS. Cruising windows down on a sunny day, utopia. Yet I drive my GS ute to work and back, but I don't dream about it. I enjoy driving it, but it is too good at what it does to engage me emotionally. The quirks and faults of the old are what I like, being able to virtually climb into a engine bay rather than scrape your hand to bits trying to change a headlight globe. Turn the dizzy, lets see what a couple of degrees advance gives me.

I don't see any valid argument anywhere in this thread except asking what do YOU want. And get what works for you. And keep the Visa handy for either option.

I like that the vast majority drive modern cars as that way when i drive my XC on a daily basis, i am the odd one out and unique and therefore i am not like a sheep and follow the rest of the pack.

For me being a car enthusiast i don't like new cars and they are only a mode of transports and nothing more but i do however respect them( ie love stealing the only good things about them and fitting it to my classic car) .

When i drive my XC it is like another fix and you could say i am addicted to it (ie like how a drug addict is addicted to cocaine, they can't wait to snort another row ). All of yous saying that it isn't comfortable to drive an old car on a daily basis have clearly got no idea. As long as the old car in question isn't a very early car like 40s and 50s there is absolute no reason as most high series cars from the 70s and 80s came with A/C, P/S, Power assisted disc brakes, intermittent wipers and halogen lights etc and therefore there is no reason for them to be uncomfortable.

MY daily driver (XC falcon) has all you need for a car to be comfortable on a daily basis eg: A/C, P/S, FM radio, rustproofed, disc brakes, intermittent wipers, halogen lights with spot lights, decent size wheels and rubber and an awesome suspension and steering that makes it handle like it is on rails. For me all the other electronic gadgets on new cars are mostly pointless and just an excuse to be lazy

You won't see me ever buying a new cars.

Your quote for reasons of buying a new car is further from the truth.

I have many a used car in my life time & sick to death working on them when they break down.
I'm lucky now that I can afford new cars & the fact of having a new car is great because I don't have to work on them as new cars are more reliable than the used car that is starting to wear out.
