Default Leyland tooling

Does anyone know what happened to the tooling for the Leyland P76 and Force 7? Were they repurposed, sold off or destroyed?

lots of stuff was sent to metal recyclers--think simms metal ?-including the 50 Force 7 that was test assembled down the line so that the line could be sold at auction. P76 wagon went to ford.P 76 was assembled in new Zealand in 2 factories until 1976. and there was some stuff sent to south Africa that didn't get used.

loads of rumours about the assembly line sale to Peru. but there was so many cars made and not assembled that countries like New Zealand got more than 2000 in CKD form-mostly bench seat 3 speed V8 super.

Zetland was handed over to RAN for a military base.

I worked at Moorebank that was somehow owner by military. The emisions center contained all the engineering drawings and some tooling, before I got there it was an apprentice training and R&D site. they produced landrovers.

sheet metal dies reported to have sent to landfill to be destroyed .These had been made By ghia. 1 story was that they didn't own these another it was a tax loss deal.. another story was they had to be destroyed to end product liability-IE there was a fault with the steering lock and steering shaft that required the car to be recalled and some cars caught fire.

engine produced in south OZ by CSA and some tooling was sent to the UK to produce special engines. P76 V8 was often used in racing. hugh numbers of terrier truck engines handed over to state governments or exported for agriculture.

lots of bits turn up in collections and items like indicator tooling was handed over to P76 owners club. lower steering arms suspension parts trims and dashes.

Leyland had enough parts for 20 years service with tons given to military and tafe. lots of dealers have now been sold up and the stock has been dumped Gent has loads of 20 ft containers purchased as scrap that never been opened, most of the other gents that had these items have died and item been picked over. Leyland crowd is like the English ford crowd.

P76 was Australian with very high local content only items like lucas head light switches and door locks had been imported and Leyland didn't own the tooling. they buy in off the shelf items like clutches-gearboxes axles. wiring was done by a gent that does custom hot rods.


6 cyl plant sent to south Africa and powered landrovers and marina and Rover car early 1980's.

1 force 7 was used by UK big boss and used to produce the late 1970's SD1 rover. lets hope that a few falcons end up in O/S collections.

About 3,000 engines were produced at the end at Zetland for Minis and Terriers. Any cars left at Zetland were completed. The whole Mini production was moved to Enfield. All the commercial vehicle tooling went to the truck factory at Footscray. Everything else was basically scrapped or auctioned.

It's all summarised in the BMC history "Building cars in Australia".

My old man worked at Leyland as a Fitter & Turner. A bloke at work has a Force 7, its a lovely sounding V8.
