Default XB GT Coupe tags on ebay

Came across this interesting ebay listing -

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ford-XB-G...item1c3ee20a0d

So the car was 'wrecked' in the 80's? ......
wouldn't surprise me, if the seller has a 'rust repair panel' shock tower available too.....

Not illegal to sell the tags, illegal to fit them. But you'ld have to have a good reason for owning them...at the end of the day, they are usless.

Its even naughty to remove them when painting engine bays

Bumped them with sander, they fell off, stuck them back on after sanding and paint is cool though

I love the "YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE NO NEE D PICTURE CONTACT ONLY IF SERIOUS" description in BIG letters.

So who here is "serious" and wants to contact him...I mean, I've got plenty of spare time on my hands over the next few days off...

EDIT...I went ahead and contacted him with a question...couldn't help myself...

Whats stopping you from welding in the shock tower panel with the VIN and putting the plates on.

As far as the officials are concerned you'd now have an official GT?

Who would know?

Probably nothing stopping you...providing the plates didn't come from a stolen and parted out GT, and you were only doing it for yourself and not to sell...which I think would be just about the only reason you'd even contemplate doing it.

Half the GTs getting around as 'genuine' would have had a VIN/tag swap

I'm sure there are some but what documented evidence do you have to support your claim that 50% of all GT's have had their tags changed

I remember as a young fella a few of dad's mates had them, and monaros, and they all drunk a lot lol, so inevitably a few got totalled.
Back in the day a reshell was pretty common, I've had a few arguments with dad's mates over the years about what constitutes a repair, and what's a tag swap.

Either way they were always adamant it was still a legit gt.

I've reported the auction, I hope everyone else is too...

They look so much nicer like that thou. So is it really illegal to take them off while painting an engine bay??? I mean they get put back on to the same vehicle after its done. Surely they would let you do that???

There are some I have heard of, I think he was over dramatising it. Plus also with the amount of "legit" GT's now. Who knows , I know what he's saying thou.

Technically they are not to be removed. In practice they almost always get removed for repainting if the car is having the engine bay restored

Thanks for that. I don't really think they would go around enforcing it so long as everything matched up to that vehicle I guess

Yes it is illegal, this is why on new cars the labels self destruct when removed from the vehicle. Don't really think it's enforced too much with the older stuff.

That's why its an absolute minefield buying an old GT, there is known cars, a lot of danger signs to look for (if it doesn't look right it probably isn't)
The better ones are usually found out in panel / paint strip downs

I looked at buying a GT coupe before I bought the two non GT coupes we have now. It had most of the body work done & had the engine bay painted. The seller had discovered during the restoration that it had been re-bodied, He tracked down previous owners & found that the original body was rusted beyond repair a long time ago, so all the GT bits were put into a Fairmont coupe body, including the shock tower & tags. He was very honest about the fact it was a re-body, but there would always be doubts about it's authenticity & any GT enthusiast I'm sure could tell it wasn't the real deal. If I were to spend the time & money to finish the restoration to GT standards there would be no guarantee it would be worth what I would have to put into it. I was looking for a coupe, not necessarily GT coupe but this one was local so I thought it would be worth a look, as it turned out it was more $ than I wanted to spend & the doubts around the re-body were enough for me to back out of the deal.

He emailed me photos of them, but blurred out the actual body and chassis numbers...just left the model number and option codes for colour, engine, etc.

Didnt this happen a couple of years back?
and the new owner goes on to say he spent $40k on it
