Does anyone know how you can trace the history of a car

The AOMC has limited data for the registration history of old vehicles.
I have not used this service so cannot comment on how useful it is.
The second link gives other states possible records.
Good luck
regards
Bill.

Sorry if this is a bit obvious but the original owners details are usually on the inside front or back cover of the service book.

How many old cars still have their original service book?

what make is it ?

I had a mate ring ford and asked who owned the car before him and where it was sold

the car was just out of warranty with no log books

Ford told him where it was sold he contacted the dealership and he got a copy of all the service and warranty work

he was chuffed he got the car at auction cheap because it had no service books or keys

turned out it had all its regular service and warranty works done

I think it was a repo

I do not know if all ford dealers will do this but he was lucky

1965 you will have very little chance most dealers destroy data after 7 years and I am sure that original dealership would not even exist and if it did new owners and no record

buying and winning lotto you would have better chances

You might be able to pay for an archive search on the engine and chassis number and also any known rego numbers.
From memory this is a state by state request with each transport authority, different fee charges apply.
If that doesn't help you could look into the freedom of information act, depends how much work you want to put into this.

Records of Vic registered vehicles do exist and can be searched through the AOMC. However previous owners names and addresses are not available, reasons given in the following website.
Have a read of this website.
I have used this service for a couple of my vehicles, with mixed results. Many records have been found to be misfiled and therefore difficult to find or lost, so good luck with it.

They are hand written cards that are in boxes. And there is more than one card for each engine or vehicle, they had a very cumbersome system back then and there would be some effort to find what they are after in all those boxes. Now they have had the records for some years I would expect they would have them in some order, but there would still be some effort. And if it was say $20 per enquiry, they would be run off their feet for the thankless task. If an owner was really interested in their car, they would spend the $100.

And remember if it wasn't for the AOMC, we wouldn't have the club permit scheme.

Could be tricky.
My XB still had its log book.
Mind you it had only done 120 thousand and I'm the third owner
