ANCAP has become irrelevant.
A waste of time money and effort - unless of course people think that physics somehow works differently in the Northern hemisphere. |

Death to ANCAP and ADRs.
If its good enough for everywhere else around the world it should be good enough for us, should adopt US/Euro and Jap design rules with minor changes to suit our market (such as head lights/tail lights etc). |

A lot of our cars here in Australia will be imported from Asia and emerging markets. Not all of those emerging manufacturing sites are safety conscious , more cost conscious so many of the models released there are bare bones basic transport as manufacturers will release the same model with vastly different specs depending on region. Having those sold here without some sort of "safety standard" visibility makes it Russian roulette for the buyer.

All cars sold here will have a NCAP rating or not. If it has a poor rating or no rating then buyer beware, I would have thought it would be no different to purchasing a car with a poor rating under the current ANCAP system.

Coriolis effect will create opposite forces northern hemisphere v Southern Hemisphere. So if you drive your car in a cyclone in northern hemisphere it will spin the opposite direction and cause vastly different damage..... Sorry , just had to mention it..... http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect

Engineering cars for right hand drive and changing some components around may affect some of the critical safety components of the car. So just saying that a 4 star NCAP rated car may end up being a 3 star ANCAP tested car. ?

ANCAP and Monash University Accident Research which finds new reasons why 'speed kills' are both as irrelevant as each other and should close down.

Still had mods, just flew under the radar I'd say all of us here with mods to our cars, 90% of those people would have illegally modified cars anyway. |

Seems one variant is tested and that rating then just gets "assumed" for the rest of the range/ variants. http://casr.adelaide.edu.au/rsr/RSR2010/Haley%20J.pdf

I remember reading an article where a representative from Mercedes-Benz said unless the impact was sustained at the exact location, angle, speed and surface size as that of the ANCAP/NCAP test it didn’t mean the vehicle would react the same as in the laboratory. The odds of the accident being the same as the test mule is possibly not much different to the variations you’ve pointed out. I think the lesson is that NCAP is a good starting guide but when you have an accident at speed (100Km/h), cross your fingers and toes for luck. I’m a believer in passive safety with systems that help warn you and assist when an accident is imminent. These systems enhance the structural integrity and safety designs of the vehicle and are only just starting to become more relevant to the ANCAP score sheet. |

ive always thought these safety ratings where a bit under cooked seeing as they only do limited testing, on the other hand , its nice to know cars coming into the country are being monitored , just because they have their own version over seas does not mean they are better, i look at it as a public service ..... more eyes on safety = better.

The new Kia Carnival in left hand drive got 5 stars in NCAP, the right hand drive conversion only gets 4 stars tested to the same standard under ANCAP. Much more deformation in the drivers footwell than the LHD version.
Imagine all the half assed RHD versions we would get if they only test on the LHD. |

Isn't what ancap doing exactly the same as E-ncap and us-ncap anyway? australia's rules follow europe, so we'll never be more strict than their tests, so with no locally made cars, ancap is just duplicating what others are doing.

As previously stated ancap would be testing locally sold cars. There is some suggestion that many global manufacturers dont always test the right hand drive variants of all their models. IMHO there is still some merit in local testing.

local testing should complement euro- and us-testing. ie the RHD versions if required. No need to reinvent the wheel.
