No, it's not just you. I agree, it is a dumb ad, and the branding of a supposed colloquialism is nothing short of a stretch.
In all my years I've never heard anyone call a Mitsubishi a Mitsi - it's patently dumb.
If they were however to rehash the old branding of "Not so Squeezy", then that people could probably identify with.

That said, the "bugger" ads were brilliantly executed, as the word "bugger" was already part of the Australian vernacular, so it immediately hit the target. Inventing a new word like Mitsi and then pretending it's already part of our language falls way short of the mark.

I have always called them Mitsi and so do a lot of people, for me it is a lazy slang term. Easier to say Mitsi than Mitsubishi.

I think 'bugger' worked in those days because the Hilux was a superior vehicle. Take a walk around country wrecking yards. Hilux parts are the only ones in demand.
