Default Steve Jobs considered building an Apple car in 2008

Wonder what the iCar would've turned out like? Hopefully a bit sexier then the Google autonomous buzz box...

Dunno, but if it's anything like the boat he had built for himself, probably not good...

It would have a few interesting features...
You could only use one particular type of fuel in it.
It would need a software update every day or two.
You wouldn't be able to use anything but genuine Apple parts and only authorise it to be used by certain members of your family.
It would have an amazing music system in it but tie your hands with so many DRM restrictions and proprietary ways of loading music on that people would be screaming in frustration.

you forgot to say it would cost an exorbitant amount of money for a basic model.

People on LinkedIn commented on that story and reacted by saying that was a genius. Everybody else in the auto industry was just ordinary, but anything Jobs does is genius, even if it's the same thing. I love Apple products, but I hate how people worship this guy. He accomplished great things, but he's not a superhero.

And, if it doesn't work, it is because you are holding the steering wheel incorrectly.
The windscreen would also be very easy to break and it would happen far to often.

A new model would be released and it would need a new plug to recharge it, cause accessories from the previous model would not fit.

Die Wahrheit sprach.

Lets not turn this thread into Apple vs. Android cause they always end up the same.

My opinion is that tech companies have no business in the automotive field and shouldn't be considering building their own cars with the flaws apparent in their already sellable product.

To date, it's been an Apple bashing speciale. Hasn't been any room for a blue vs red.

People said the same for Tesla, now they love them and point out that they are quicker than a V8 Supercar. I'd rather wait to see what they can do before queuing the bashing.

Apple has brought out a lot of great products, and I've used them trouble free. Haters gonna hate.

Don't get me wrong...I have an iPhone 6, I have an old iPod in my Celica, and an iPod touch in my work bag.

However this doesn't mean I can excuse the many frustrations that Apple creates...no possibility of adding extra memory with a micro SD card like every other device does, chaining you into using iTunes, making it very hard without a third party program to simply drag and drop files to and from the ipod/iphone like every other maker, etc. There's literally no reason for them to be like this.

Going through a speed bump too fast will bend the car slightly.

So you bought a phone that doesn't fit your want/need and then complain about it?

No wonder Toyota's sell well.

Fan bois ? Naah not really, i actually like some of the apple stuff , but you must confess some things the company does like any company deserves criticism, you pay a premium for everything, and while some of the stuff is good , some of it is absolute crap.

It's quite smart for them to have their own infrastructure to sell you more music and make more money.

And I disagree that there is no reason - they are very resistant to malware and viruses as a result of how locked down they are. I see it as a positive, and it works for me, but can totally understand how some would find it annoying.

Some of it works, some of it flops, thems the breaks of business.

You definitely pay a premium, but look at the quality of the products. My Macbook Pro is made out a solid piece of milled aluminium, and when you open the lid, there is no creaking or bending. It is a solid unit and you feel like you are getting what you pay for.

I still think the Apple Watch is a gimmick yet to come into its own, and the lack of some basic functionality in iOS and even OS X leaves me frustrated at times. I then boot into Windows at work or on Bootcamp and remember why I made the change.

I get it, some people just don't like the way the systems are closed off, others hate them because they don't like how they work, but there are also others than just love to ***** and moan and listen to the sound of their own voice. There is a product out there for everyone, even used panties vending machines.

You've got it take your hat off to Tesla for at least 're-inventing' the electric car into a machine.

Now, image if Apple were in the race as well; Tesla v Apple... i reckon it would be a challenge worth watching!

Considering how much money Apple has and how much money Tesla loses every year, I think you can figure out which company would win.

ha ha! Good point turbo4! But, this is the IT industry we're talking about and (just like Twitter) they all keep losing money, but they all must keep attracting more investors!

Tech companies have been the ones disrupting traditional industries that have not innovated for decades or more. The printing industry really didnt change a lot for 100's of years, now you dont think twice about an ebook or magazine. Taxi's failed to evolve and Uber comes along. The music and Film industry refused to evolve enter napster apple netflix. Kodak vs digital photography. The list goes on. Yes there is short term consequences for those in the industry being disrupted but as consumers we have benefited from disruption as we will in the future with cars. Telsa have made a great step forward but now more will get involved and make the technology more affordable. So if you ask me the tech companies should absolutely get involved and force traditional car manufactures to innovate or disappear
