Hi
How do people that have a old car with a lot of km make them as good as a car with low km when money's tight or they don't want to get rid of theirs or they've spent so much already that they will never get their money back. Talking about old cars with lots km needing fair bit of work |

I'm in the same boat here mate no money to fix the car up and no money to update so I just drive the thing from a to b not too far from home and change the oil once a year.
I found some polish and wax on special gave it a rub looks half decent now I need new shocks so always scan ebay for some on cheapies other than that it runs good and is reliable so don't with it much. |

How do people that don't want to update or have spent so much they'd never get their money back get their old ones as good as a new one,
Why do a lot of families and people that travel to meetings for their job get rid of them at a point |

I have the thinking you will never get the money back you spent on the car.
If you need a reliable car for work, you need to find a way to upgrade to a better car. |

Why do a lot of families and people that travel to meetings for their job get rid of them at a point when their old ones have a lot wrong or at a certain like age before they start to have problems |

Go through them in order. Brakes then suspension, eng/trans, electrics, etc. takes Tim end money.

Donor wreck of same model and year with lower mileage. Used to have endless supplies of awesome quality Falcon/FPV spares from a local Lebo wrecker (admittedly from questionable sources). This kept the 390,000 km BA running for a long time, and ended up turbocharged, decked out with FPV bits and running on injected LPG. Sadly the law eventually caught up with the blokes and unrealistically cheap spares are now a fond memory.

Why do " families or people that travel or conferences change cars at a certain mileage before big problems start"? you answered your own question, so big problems don't start.
What car are you talking about? |

To answer the question...
Spend plenty of $$$$$$ Service it regularly, wash it every month, wax it every six months, fix the brakes, buy good quality tyres, get any noise seen to by your mechanic. A car is never there to make money on - it is a money pit. Such is life. If you are not prepared to spend $$$$$ then don't own a car - hopefully it will save your life some day rather than it turning into a death trap. If you follow my advice here's what your car may look like when it is 15 years old ... Last edited by Cav; 30-05-2016 at 04:49 PM. |

I think along the same lines as Cav. You look after it and it will look after you. I always keep it looking nice so I am proud to be seen driving it. So wash and polish and keeping away from gutters etc. Look after the fluids - oil water and brake. They all are reasonably cheap to change, and changing them is a good preventative measure. As with tyres. Keep an eye on them and you can budget for new ones. Finally, listen to what your car is telling you. Investigate any rattles or strange noise and fix the cause. Hope these simple tips help.

A lot of those people lease the car for a three or four year period, and therefore pay a certain amount each month to keep it maintained and for fuel. At the end of that time they hand it back and start all over again.

This.
There are only three things (that I can think of) that will affect how long a car lasts: 1. Statutory write-off 2. Law 3. Your budget If you're prepared to keep spending money on a car, then subject to 1 and 2, you can theoretically keep it forever.

I'm too old fat and lazy to worry about whether someone is a troll or not.
I like any excuse to talk about my cars and post pics of them. I never heard the word troll (although I knew a few trollops) when I wuz a young bloke. I did some searching on the interweb. Apparently this is what a troll looks like... Last edited by Cav; 09-09-2016 at 09:59 AM. |

Look all you can really do is either spend a lot of money and fix up the car to new condition, or just wait till things break and be prepared to fix them when they do. Also, if you have a high mileage car and no money, the radio is your best friend. Nothing fixes a weird new noise like a loud radio, I mean turn up the volume and the car fixes itself, it's totally legit I swear! In all honesty, my fairlane is extremely high mileage by standard car terms. About 425,000Kms on the clock and only 11 years old. It's surprisingly reliable and I can't say anything serious has broken yet. I mean the discs are worn down, it needs some routine maintenance and the discs were warped, but nothing that means the car "breaks down" and has to go straight to the mechanic.

Leave the OP alone guys - he's asked a question and deserves a qualified answer to his post or other posts.
car10002 is respectful and does not need to be treated like the way I've seen in this thread or others he's asked questions in. He does not treat anyone with disrespect, and is definitely not a troll. Accept that we are all not the same. car10002 comes here for advice and opinions like most of us do. Respect people, that's all that I ask. Cheers!

If my car is starting to get a bit of age. I get a detail done. And the paint work de swirled and polished. Gives it a new lease on life.

In 1992 I bought a very tired neglected XE van with 190,000 on the clock, over the next 15 years I put another 650,000 km on the clock. I kept it going by gradually replacing everything that was worn out with new or reconditioned parts before they failed, servicing it regularly, and upgrading it if possible with parts from later models. In the end it had, air con, 4 Wheel disc brakes with a lsd, 12 slott wheels, sports dashboard, int. wipers, spot and fog lamps, LPG, and other things that were never fitted to an XE van.
During that time it only left me stranded twice, once the coil burnt out, and another time the starter died, both things easily fixed on the side of the road. The secret is repair it properly with new parts and service it regularly. Unfortunately the above advice is impractical unless you can do most of the work yourself, and it helps if you have a dead one or two in the paddock My trusty XE finally died when a bloke driving a boom lift on a building site ran into it.
