Default Masters - Closing down sale - What bargains did you score?

with more than half a billion dollars of discount hardware being offloaded in their massive fire sale before the chain closes in December, just wondering if any of you have scored yourself a bargain?

I'll kick off....

I needed a new lawn mower, as it was going to cost to much to get my old Victa repaired and serviced.

Now I only have a small back lawn to maintain which is undulating and easy to mow, so did not need anything too powerful.

Scored this "Yum Cha" Sanli Bumble Bee for a low $135 !
At a price less than 5 packs of smokes... If if lasts me the 12 month warranty I'll be happy

At the Masters I went to, there were still lots of stock available.

It needed 600ML of SAE30 oil out of the box, so chucked in some Nulon full synthetic 5w - 30 I had sitting in the shed.

Went to fill up the tank on this 118cc overhead valve 4-stoke and the cap label said "use 95 premium unleaded minimum"!....

Well only had RON91 in the jerry can... So I thought, no problem I'll add some Nulon Pro Octane Booster and raise the Octane to 100

That should give me 300cbKW (Cutting Blade Kilowatts)

Seriously though for the money... She started first time, runs fairly quiet and did the job without blowing a puff of smoke!

So I'm a happy camper

I went in there a couple of weeks ago because I needed a heap of new work tools. Had a look at there prices, subtracted 10% and Bunnings were still cheaper. I walked out empty handed.

Says it all really.

I went in to my local masters yesterday, never seen the place so busy but yeah i have to agree stuff like power tools only have 15% off.gear like drill bits or jig saw blades which i was after were still dear as buggery.i got the same blades at bunnings for half the price. I'd say the closer the close date gets thats when the real fire sale will start. When" wow sight and sound" a jb hifi competitor for those who never heard of them closed they sold everything even the shelves for next to nothing on their last weekend of trade so maybe masters will do the same?

I have found it a bit of a let down. My nearest Masters is well over 100km away but I pass a couple when I have to go down to Brisbane so I have been towing the trailer just in case.

So far I bought a new kitchen mixer tap at a pretty good price and that's it.

I've bought quite a lot of sleepers from Bunnings though...

Where refurbishing our motel rooms and have got a few things from Masters but to be honest not too much, as others have said, even with discount it's still cheaper elsewhere and you also have access to their return policies.

Was in the Ballarat store a couple of days ago and noticed quite a few items now with 30% off, although nothing that we wanted or needed, as they get nearer to the closing up date the discounts will be bigger, but in the words of a couple of employees we have spoken to “it will be on all the crap that no one want’s anyhow”….

Have also heard that some of the suppliers to Masters are negotiating buying back stock as they don’t want their market flooded with discounted items, makes sense……

Interestingly, Home Timber and Hardware (which is also owned by Woolworths through Danks Holdings) is been sold to Mitre 10 owner Metcash, that sale should be completed by the end of October.

Am guessing entering the Hardware game has put a little dent in Woolworths globalisation ambitions in Australia

I was looking at cupboard handles and door fittings, Bunnings is across the road from Masters so easy to compare.

Masters discounted price was largely still dearer than Bunnings normal price.

Even the staff were bitching about the store lying to customers.

I have bought some small stuff like rolls of tape and bags of cable ties but there isnt much else there at what I would consider a good price.

Funnily enough I have never been attended to so quickly by the staff now the place is closing, even if it is just because they want to make sure you're not pinching stuff.

Stuff won't get decent discounts until near the end, and even then a lot of their stock is actually on consignment so will just go back to the suppliers at the end.

Company I work for is a third party supplier to master (and Bunnings, mitre 10, home hardware etc) and it was only middle of last week we got told no more orders.

Exactly what I did Masters Taree, went to buy some power tools and a BBQ I needed, walked out empty handed and went to Bunnings and got a better deal.

Sausage sandwich at Bunnings was better as well, no wonder Masters are going broke.

I was thinking this until I decided to go for a wander there today.

I needed 15m of shadecloth, they had 40% off, so I actually had a win.

Until you find out it's some american knockoff crap that wont last in our conditions. Thats happened to me more than once, hence no more masters muck in my house.

Don't expect too much of a saving.

I went there on Sunday and get a few items, but nothing mega-cheap. At the register they say "they sale is final with no option for returns"

Nothing is discounted, we've found. And of the stuff that is left, it's nothing that is really of any use. All the popular items/sizes are gone - and won't be re-stocked of course.

We've also had a massive Bunnings open across the road from work this week, but found there were no great opening specials in store either.

Kind of like the Dick Smith clearance... Nothing decent and anything that as decent was more expensive than justb next door at JB HiFi

The only real bargain i found was Microfibe washmits that are usually $11 at Supercheap Auto for $3.75, outside of that as said earlier not that much going real cheap just yet, will be closer to the end of the year before we really see some discounts. Unfortunately the majority of shoppers go in with the perception that everything is cheap and heavily discounted and thus walk out with trolleys full of gear which leaves us smarter shoppers with little to pick at towards the end. Credit where credit is due its a job well done by the marketing department.
