Excellent. Thanks guys! Keep em coming!

I gave Google and Sensis a royal rogering during lunch today and there's really not a lot of companies in this industry (prestige/sportscar hire) that have a decent web presence. Seems to be a lot more to choose from in Sydney and Melbourne too unfortunately, but why would anyone bother renting a sportscar in a CITY

The Cobra is a pretty good option and relatively cheap too, meaning I could perhaps get it for the whole week, but I'm a bit p!ssed at the excess of it when hired on the Gold Coast, compared to a more expensive car hired in say Sydney. Will have to enquire on that further.

If that's the case your mate is obviously just a poser and can't drive and you live in a dream world

Perhaps Roberto Ravaglia driving a 328i will leave your mate driving his Testarossa (correct spelling) for dead on a twisty road, but a reasonable driver in a 328 wouldn't see where a reasonable driver in a Testarossa went.

Just be VERY wary of the bond!.. There is a certain exotic type car rental place down here in Melb ( New, apparently, "reputable" owners now) that used to take 2 to 5 grand, depending on whether it was a bemma or ferrari, out of your credit card as the bond, (NOT just swiping it) and weren't giving it back!
They also dudded me on a Gift voucher I was given for a 1 day hire of a Boxster, refusing to honour it! Saying the voucher was purchased from someone not authorised to print out vouchers! (Wonder if it had anything to do with me showing them the news clippings about their credit card scam, & expressing concern about them wanting my card to take the car?)

Most of the more prestigious vehicles also require a hefty deposit, taken from your credit card. I'm talking thousands here.
In Melbourne you need a $15,000 deposit from you credit card if you want to hire a Lambo. I don't remember the rental place I believe its VIP or something like that in Hawthorn.

*Ahh charliewool you beat me to it.

I have an awsome video clip of the M3 from top gear. But I don't know how to put it on :.

That's the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard. I challenge any E46 M3, 330i or 328i to try and beat my uncle's Ferrari F355 Berlinetta on any sort of windy road. I don't care who's driving what car, unless you put Schumacher in the 328 and a leaner in the Ferrari, the BMW will get its butt kicked. And Ferrari's aren't exactly renowned for their straight line speed, so that's one interesting theory you've got.

Sorry about the slight thread highjackage, anyway.

Rent a Ferrari 355 or 360 if you can! Awesome, awesome cars. A 911 Turbo wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Id go the 360 if I had a choice... or a dodge viper. No-one seems to have those though :S

The 360 says "Im old and imported an 18yr old from russia to pleasure me", whereas porchse says "I have a small ИИИИИ" and thats never cool.

As for BMWs....they bore me.

Yes very good point mate. I had been quite wary at some of the fine print for some of these rental companies, but I didn't think that they would KEEP the bond! That is outrageous and certainly makes the deal completely unaffordable and valueless.

The search goes on, but I'm half inclined now to go for the Cobra and sink the remaining cash into one of these track days at Eastern Creek, be it in a Formula Holden, or one of the Ariel Atom days. :

The Cobra or even a Mustang would be a decent choice. On one of the earlier sites both had 351s in them. The Ferrari 360 has a $20000 bond!!!!! The M3 looked good too, but has a $10000 bond. The 330Ci convertible would be nice for a recent car at a more realistic price.

HAHAHAA That's hilarious. The Ferrari would POO all over the BMW....even an old skool Don Johnson mid 80's spec Testarossa LOL! For a start, the Ferrari has 100bhp and 6 cylinders more than the BMW. Maybe your mate just can't drive.

Well an update... I have got in touch with a few of these guys and have had mixed responses (my satisfaction level!). At the moment the two most likely candidates are the Cobra and the Z4 3L manual.

The only problem I've got with the Cobra is that their fine print is truly scary, in terms of bond, insurance excess, and a few other little points. The guy I spoke to over the phone was actually pretty abrupt and that instantly puts them down my list - needless rudeness, or acting like my enquiries are "wasting his time", doesn't go down too well with me. You can "buy" extra insurance cover, which is a typical ploy of ALL car rental companies and is where they make the majority of their profit. In the case of these guys, it means that for even just 2 days rental of a Cobra, adding the costs of the "extra" coverage, the tally is nudging $1k - fast becoming "not so good value"!!!

Still chasing up on the Z4 manual, most places have the 2.5 tiptronic which I have absolutely no interest in paying for, but the 3L manual would be pretty fun. Waiting on them to get back to me on availability and final pricing.

So the search continues... who knows, I might just get jack of hunting, and go buy an airfare to somewhere instead for a holiday!

just be careful of them.... My brother has just gone to qld... he organised a porsche boxter for the day.. paid the money etc..
anyway, about a week before he left (last wednesday) he emailed them to ask if he could get it an hour earlier, and the email was rejected!!!
So he called them up... only to find out that the place has closed down!!! phone goes to a messagebank saying they have gone through the books and have gone broke. No forwarding names or numbers... thats it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the place was "Roadster Convertable Car Rentals" not a dodgy backyard guy.. they worked out of jupiters casino....

just dont pay much in advance, thats all...

Being a Gold Coaster myself, I'd say get something VERY VERY different if you want to stick out a little.

Driving a Ferarri on the gold coast? As common as Commodores, many people have them and they arent much of a rarity. Same goes for Porsche.
