Default Oil Level Check

Hi Guys

Quick question. Whats the reason my Instruction manual for my F6 tells me to check the engine oil level when the engine is hot.
I used to check the level in the morning when the car was sitting all night on a level surface.
Have i been checking the level wrong. Should I be getting the engine to normal operating temp and then switch the car off and wait a few minutes and then check? Whats the reason for this?

Only because the oil level will be different when it has been traveling through the motor and the turbo. It will be lower in the sump, as opposed to being cold and most the oil draining back into the sump, where the dipstick lives.

Thanks for that. So basically when the engine is cold it should be above the full line as long as its around the full line on the dipstick when its hot. No Probs
I think most people I know are checking theirs cold.
