Broadmeadows has closed and we still have Toyota and Holden to go towards the end of the year.
What are all these workers going to do? |

Realistically they've had plenty of advance warning, they should have been working towards other employment some time ago.
While it's sad they're losing their jobs they get much more warning than pretty much any other industry. |

So, what for example, should they have been working towards in regards to other employment opportunities?
Where are these 'other' employment opportunities? |

A number of people are doing landscaping courses, one is doing a MBA and others are doing a number of other courses/apprenticeships all paid for by Toyota.

A lot have been working for a very long time with Holden and Toyota and will have a large redundancy payment that will tide them over before finding another job or retiring.
It's no different to any other industry really, just these 2 companies are currently in the media. Last year my previous employer made 250 of us redundant due to the company we had a contract with taking its operations to Manila. Some people found new employment some still are unemployed. |

Hard to just find a job when so many industries are leaving and heading overseas. Thousands of people will be losing jobs from Australian car factories, I highly doubt there are thousands of unfilled jobs waiting for them in that area. This is just the beginning. Once everything is automated millions will lose jobs. Guess everyone can just work in IT after that. |

the term unemployed is not what you'd think when used by politicians and Govco (Aus)
You don't need to be on centrelink benefits, but you must have worked less then 1 hr/week and be looking for work. If you are near retirement age, and have just been paid a small lotto win because the company you worked for has closed, you may not be looking for work, and therefore in Govco's eyes are not unemployed. Just sayin... |

Toyota have been extremely generous with their offering leading into the factory closure.
While a lot of the people who work there are happy to accept big payouts and either retire/retire early/work part time from that point onwards; those who took advantage of paid training had to weigh up searching for and getting another job prior to closure, or getting trained up and waiting until after the closure to look for work. (Hard choice) the third group who haven't been there long enough for a decent payout and haven't planned ahead will be the most troubled. The majority of reskilling has been into industries other than manufacture which can capitalise on people who are used to process driven environments. Irrespectively, sad to see everyone closing up. |

Meanwhile, with very few spare jobs, with more & more people unable to find Full Time Employment
the government still lets thousands more unskilled people enter the country each month & hands them out billions of dollars in welfare. What does the future hold for this place? |

Not factory workers but former Automotive just the same.
I am biased as I am on the inside of this industry. Small steps... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hr-R1_K6CE

compare how many weeks the average employee gets. the car industry's redundancy provisions are extremely generous compared with the manufacturing industry generally, I'm certainly not going to feel sorry for someone pocketing several years worth salary, when the norm is a few months. |

Centrelink. Imagine the queues at Elizabeth, SA when the lame lion factory closes its doors for good.

It all depends where you are in life. The older blokes would be pushing **** up hill to get another job anyway so might as well get a redundancy and those that are close to retirement will be fine.
If I were a younger bloke however I would of been trying to get a another job because the redundancy payment only goes so far but now you have a whole heap of blokes out on their **** in one go battling for already too few jobs. Glad it isn't me because I've been made redundant and it sucks. |

There will be thousands from Toyota and Holden that won't be able to find another job but are more than willing to work. These numbers though are nothing compared to the job losses that will occur from the supply chain. The economy won't be able to absorb such a massive hit.

How did you guys feel when the pools of typists were made redundant, due to the advent of the computer and word processors. The jolly little piece of gear sitting on your desk has certainly changed life. I suspect the loss of the motor vehicle manufacturing industry in Australia may well balance out, over time, as well. Remember, we all had a part in this.

The closing of these manufacturing plants is not something that we should not have expected. Full scale automation is not far away, I wouldn't be surprised to see a large scale reduction in other plants across the globe as robotics and AI improve and is rolled out to industry.
