Default Commonwealth Games???WTF??

I'm sorry, but I am disgusted by the games coverage by channel 9, The indian shooter who won 5 gold mendals wasn't even covered and Scotlands best female swimmer wins gold and didnt get a shot onscreen because Australia got silver...... now I live here and wholly embrace all the aussie values but this is pathetic.
it seems that more than a few Aussies share my opinion judging by the points of view programme on TV just now.

I know that Australia is a force to be reckoned with in sport but the lack of recognition of some other nations is frankly appauling.
God forbid we become a nation like the US where we live in a little bubble and forget what happens with the rest of the world.

I'm very disappointed. Is this an unfair accusation? I know I am asking an Australian forum but "knowing" the open-minded manner of many of the members here, I thought I'd see what you guys think.

I am Scottish (obviously!) and we are not a nation renowned for our sporting prowess but I was gutted that we got so little recognition for our small victories in what is a very important sport for Australia.

Am I waxing lyrical or just being fair? :

Your not the only one with them thoughts mate, my wife is Scottish and says exactly what you say as even I got sick of the national anthem.
Surely you must realise by know how selfish our media is especially when it comes to winning, poor example for a multicultural state.

Heard it's the same in other countries (tv coverage favouring locals so it's not just happening here, UK even more so)
It shouldn't really happen at an international event, especially something like olympic/commonwealth games but it does, so be it I suppose.
Any TV coverage is about MONEY, look at the millions paid just to cover AFL games.
Biased Aussie coverage is likely to draw more viewers.

To be honset Commonwealth Games do not mean jack. What kind of competition do you have; England, Canada, Australia, etc. Vs the 3rd World Nations. No S!$T the developed countried are gonna hog the Medal Tally.
It's also a chance of the 3rd World Nations to make it in the top 20 of the Medal Tally as in the Olympics they would by part of the last 20.

As far as I see the Comm Games, they do not count, no comp and more of a reason for the Queen to come and collect more cash.

Damn thats a really poor attitude. Why doesnt it count for anything? We belong to the commonwealth, and its a chance for us countrys, races, religions whom belong to this group to come together and have a peaceful event. Now what the hell is wrong with that! Its called being social and accepting that there are other people in this world.
What would you rather no intionational sport or activities? for us to stay in our own country and keep to ourselves and not car what other people do? :
At the very least have some pride and compasion for the athletes who worked very hard for most of there lives to get a medal in these game, which appently mean ИИИИ. Seariously I would like you to do half of what these athletes go through and then tell me if these games mean ИИИИ all

To be fair, the UK is probably the least biassed when it comes to coverage0- propbably because if it only covered UK winning medals, there wouldnt be much coverage!
Good point about AFL!

its all about returns . mega bucks to a small few. nothing more. thats the telivised side of it anyway. 15000 volunteers working for nothing to make mega dollars for the already rich. sorry to be pessimistic . but its always the same . but hey that is entertainment. at least we get something out of it.

i think TV had to compensate for the winter olympics, as there was pretty much nothing to present for Australia ...

I gave up watching the com games after one day as it was boring me ИИИИless

Have to feel sorry for my dad, he's stuck at home with a broken leg, the national anthem is like dragging fingernails down a blackboard for him now! :

Makes it sound like they blanked out the other competitors : We saw them win just didn't get an interview afterwards. If you wanted to see them so bad maybe you should have got tickets? Australia didn't win a match in the last night of rugby 7s but it was still a great night especially with the Kenyans and Tongans having some fun.

scottishxc, as a fellow Scotsman and aussie citizen. I agree whole heartedly with what you said the coverage was very biased, my kids are sick of hearing me say that the media are turning yankee, "WE DONE THIS ,WE WON THAT" or we DIDNT WIN ANYTHING WE CAME SECOND AND THIRD, etc.etc. Its not Only the Games its creeping into other sports also and its getting annoying. BUT my BIGGEST pet hate is when our motorsport commentators talk about some one coming down the STRAIGHTAWAY, its the straight, front straight back straight its ONLY a Straight nothing else, NO MORE AMERICANISMS...

Hmmmmm......so you are not interested in other countries competing in your homeland...fair enough but you missed the point a little- how was I to know that the coverage would be biassed on 9 and not on pay-tv?

We actually had it on pay tv too at home, my comment was regarding Channel 9 mainly.

It is not "because this is AUSTRALIA", that is saying that all Australians are as uniterested as you but from the feedback from the general public, many Aussies were a little annoyed by this too, hence the programme on TV last night!

Sorry, I can't remember what it was!

Its the same with the olympic coverage, the same bio's on Aussie athletes repeated 10 times a day.

Considering how multi cultural we are proclaimed to be they could show some different athletes and anthems.

I do agree that the coverage was very biased, how could you say it was not, but my personal opinion is that I enjoyed it the way it was broadcast. Of course I can understand why some people wouldnt have liked it, and I respect their decision on that.

No probs Monty! I respect your personal opinion.....thats the point of this thred, to see what everyone thought and its interesting to see a varied bunch of views.

For those of us who aren't Aussie through and through (of which there are bloody hundreds!) it was disappointing.

Sheesh, actually, I am pretty blooming Aussie myself- hotted up XC??!!

As I said mate, Olympic Games and the World Cup is where all the Nations of the World come together, this is where the tension and competition rises, this is where the best of best come to become No. 1.
The Comm Games is like a Big/Intensive practice session for the Developed Nations before the Olympic Games.

Yes, it was fantastic to have Melbourne host the 06 Comm Games, but now what happens we've go 14 fellas that think they can just call Australia home.
Majority of our parents, their parents and families busted their balls to earn enough cash to get to this land for a brighter future for us (their kids) the legal hard earned way.
